LONES ARE THE THIRD RULER COMMUNITY IN JK

LONES OF KUPWARA Lones are the third community of ancient rular community of kashmir, who were converted to Islam from vaishyas. The vaishyas formed the third important community who were mostly involved in agricultural activities. The word " lone" has been derived from the word Lavanyas, who were mostly influential land owners and tribal headmen during the ancient & medieval periods of kashmir. It was during Sultan shahmir with the title of Shames u din ( 1343 - 1347AD) , who firmly planted muslim rule in kashmir by subdued lavanyas ( Lones of kashmir) .
The lones of Kashmir which were earlier known as Lavanyas find their mention in Rajtarangni in the Tarang no 7 & 8. and in the valley of kashmir by W R lawrence. Raja Harash"s rule in kashmir & raja Jai singh's rule 1177 AD. was even destroyed by Lones. Lones had their active part in the ancient & medieval states of kashmir. They took part in the administration of the state and occupied most important positions in the state affairs.
The Lones of Kupwara are the original stock of inhabitants of kashmir, which are spread in every village of the district . And are very polite and well cultured. After their adaptation of Islam , the present stock of Lun ( Lones ) are mostly polite in charecter. They easily compromise on every issue related to their daily life. They are involved in many professions, mostly in agriculture and other business activities. Lones mostly form the bulk of population in both the parts of kashmir. we find the mention of Aziz lone and his brother as the zaildars of Magam who were not only famous in the district but were known for their fames in whole of kashmir valley Many of the Lones familes are said to have migrated to Punjab. In the census of 1911 AD. the total population of lones were estimated as 51931 in the valley. but most of them are said to have settled in the northern part of the valley most probaly in todays kupwara district. So in todays context , the community of
Lones forms the majority of the population in the district.
