establishment of drug de-addiction centres in 311 higher secondary schools, Director School Education Kashmir Dr G N Itoo has said the move will be very helpful in making government’s recent drug de-addiction policy a success.
DSEK expressed these views during the inauguration of the training centre of Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Unified Martial at Natipora, Srinagar.
Itoo said through the implementation of the initiative ‘Drug Out, Sports In’, the drug menace can be eradicated from whole Jammu and Kashmir. He appealed health department, youth services and sports, other allied departments and NGOs to coordinate in the smooth functioning of these 311 drug de-addiction centres so that this evil is eradicated from the society.
On the occasion, DSEK also announced the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with J&K Academy of Unified Martial Arts regarding ‘Drug Out, Sports In’.
Through sports, youth can be kept away from drug menace, DSEK said.
Appreciating the initiative of J&K Academy of Unified Martial Arts, DSEK advised them to expand these types of activities to other parts of valley as well.
During the inaugural ceremony of the Martial Arts centre, Abid Bashir Sofi, president of the academy, said, “This training centre is unique as it is equipped with latest facilities and equipments. The academy is utilising the services of martial art experts from Canada and Philippines with the help of whom the players of the valley can match the other players at national level.”
Rameez Khan, general secretary, said the academy is working to attract youth towards sports for the eradication of drug menace and development of sound mental health. In this regard, we are organising programmes in many schools and colleges, he said.
During the function, Codi, the martial arts expert from Canada assured of benefiting the valley’s youth through his experience.
Advisor of the academy, Hina Salman, advised to expand the academy to various parts of the valley and take benefit from it.
Imtiyaz Chisti, chairman youth development highlighted the importance of sports and advised the parents to give ample time to their children and provide them opportunities to participate in sports activities.
On the occasion, the kids also enthralled the audience by their martial arts skills. The function was attended by many national and international players of martial arts, students and parents.

According to the official order, the HRD ministry has "instructed all the states and Union Territories to formulate guidelines to regulate the teaching of subjects and weight of school bags in accordance with the Government of India instructions". As per these instructions, which the schools have been asked to comply with, institutions cannot assign homework to students of classes I and II. "Schools should not prescribe any other subjects except language and mathematics for classes I and II and language, EVS and mathematics for classes III to V students as prescribed by the NCERT," the order said. Students should not be asked to bring additional books, extra materials and the weight of a school bag should not exceed the prescribed limit, the order added. The weight of school bags for students of classes I and II should not exceed 1.5 kg, while the school bag of students of class III to V should weigh between 2 kg to 3 kg. The school bag of students of classes VI and VII should not be more than 4 kg, while weight of school bags of classes VIII and IX students should not be above 4.5 kg. The school bag of a class X student should not weigh above 5 kg, the order said.
