KULGAM,AUGUST,01:

Under the Classes of Joy initiative launched to bridge foundational learning gaps among students a week-long elementary teacher training programme concluded yesterday in Kulgam.

Organised by the District Administration in collaboration with the Pratham Education Foundation and the School Education Department, the training is based on the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach and is being implemented across all 458 primary and middle schools of the district.

As part of efforts to ensure robust on-ground implementation, Heads of Institutions (HOIs) and Zonal-Level Committees were sensitized and urged to take proactive steps in overseeing and supporting the effective rollout of the TaRL approach in their respective schools and zones.

The Deputy Commissioner Kulgam, Athar Aamir Khan (IAS), presided over the session today.

He appreciated the enthusiastic participation of teachers and stakeholders, and emphasized the collective responsibility in addressing learning gaps to ensure that every child benefits from this mission.

This is more than just a training programme, it is a mission to transform classrooms into joyful, engaging spaces focused on real learning.

HOIs and zonal teams, teacher's must take ownership to ensure this vision reaches every child,” the DC remarked.

He further stressed that classrooms must become the most joyful places for children and acknowledged the pivotal role teachers play in shaping young minds.

He added that through collective effort, placed with sincerity and dedication, the education system can be truly transformed.

Over the course of the programme, more than 2,100 elementary teachers were trained in multiple batches, with approximately 300 participants attending each day. Teachers were also provided with comprehensive teaching-learning materials to support the implementation of the strategies covered during the training.

Participants shared encouraging feedback, describing the training as practical, relevant, and well-aligned with everyday classroom challenges. They particularly appreciated the activity-based learning model and expressed a strong desire for more such capacity-building initiatives in the future.

The session was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner Kulgam, Viqar Giri, along with officers from the Education Department and other key stakeholders.

Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) is designed to improve foundational literacy and numeracy skills among primary school children, particularly in low-resource settings. It focuses on tailoring instruction to students' actual learning levels rather than their age or grade.

Key Features:

Assessment-Driven: Begins with a simple, rapid assessment to gauge students' current reading and math abilities.

Grouping by Level: Students are grouped based on their learning levels (e.g., beginner, letter recognition, word reading) rather than grade for targeted instruction.

Focused Activities: Uses engaging, activity-based teaching methods to build foundational skills, emphasizing daily practice and interaction.

Short-Term Interventions: Typically implemented in dedicated learning camps (20-40 days) or within regular school hours, with 1-2 hours daily.
Teacher Training: Equips teachers and volunteers with training to deliver level-appropriate instruction effectively.

Continuous Monitoring: Regular assessments track progress, allowing regrouping and adjustment of teaching strategies. 01/08/2025
