LOD in Tableau:

LOD means Level of Detail, LOD expressions are used to run complex queries involving many dimensions at the data source level instead of bringing all the data to Tableau interface.

There are 3 types of LOD’s in Tableau

1. Fixed LOD

2. Include LOD

3. Exclude LOD

Fixed LOD:

This expression computes values using the specified dimensions without reference to any other dimensions in the view.

Examples: Take an example- super store data and insurance data

Case1: We need region wise sales

LOD Expression: { FIXED[Region] : SUM([sales]) }

Case2: We need count of fraud’s happen in particular country in insurance domain data

LOD Expression: { FIXED[State]:SUM(IF([Fraud]='yes')THEN 1 ELSE 0 END ) }

Include LOD:

This level of detail expressions compute values using the specified dimensions in addition to whatever dimensions are in the view.

Examples: Take an example- super store data

Case1: Calculate the sum of sales per state for each sub-category of products. Frist we need to drag sales measure in rows shelf and sub category into columns

LOD Expression: { INCLUDE [STATE] : SUM([sales]) }

Exclude LOD:

These levels of detail expressions subtract dimensions from the view level of detail.

Examples: Take an example- super store data

Case1: Exclude Region from Sales figure calculated for every month

LOD Expression: { EXCLUDE[Region] : SUM([sales]) }
