Common Name: Travancore Balsm

An annual, fleshy herb up to 30 cm tall, found growing on wet rocks. Leaves are crowded and rosulate towards tip, elliptic, nearly pointed, rounded toothed, fringed with hairs in crenatures. This species is endemic to Southern Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu and Kerala and assessed as Critically Endangered (CR).

Botanical Name: Asystasia gangetica (L.) T. Anderson var. krishnae Dhruvan, Pandur. & Mohanan
Family: Acanthaceae 

A new variety, recently published from Kollam district of Kerala. It differs from the typical variety in having larger (2–9 cm long), mostly ovate-lanceolate leaves with long-attenuate bases, violet-purple bracts and bracteoles, smaller (1.8-2 cm) simple hairy, corolla limb, and anthers with a vertical violet-black band on the sides.

Botanical Name: Limnocharis flava (L.) Buchenau
Family: Alismataceae 
Common Name: Yellow velvetleaf, sawah flower rush, sawah lettuce.

A rhizomatous hydrogeophyte, native to Mexico, Central America, South America, Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic but widely naturalized in southern and southeastern Asia: India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and southern China (Guangdong, Yunnan).

Traditionally this plant is an important vegetable in parts of Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Isan (Thailand) and parts of India, where the central flower stalk and the leaves are used in soups, curries, salads and stir-fries. In honor of her birth anniversary, we commemorate E. K. Janaki Ammal (4 November 1897 – 7 February 1984), the pioneering Indian botanist.

Born in Thalassery, Kerala, she made history as the first Indian woman to earn a PhD in Botany. Renowned for her research in plant breeding, cytogenetics, and phytogeography, she conducted notable studies on sugarcane and eggplant.

Collaborating with C.D. Darlington, she co-authored the Chromosome Atlas of Cultivated Plants in 1945. Janaki Ammal's diverse interests extended to ethnobotany, focusing on medicinal and economically valuable plants in the rainforests of Kerala, India.

Her contributions were acknowledged with the Padma Shri in 1977, presented by the then Prime Minister of India.
