The L&D page is a beautiful space for reading and writing—and little else. The words are central.

The Literary & Debating Club of NIT Calicut (National Institute of Technology Calicut) is one of the oldest and the most prestigious clubs of NIT-C. Ever since its birth in the REC times, the club has taken up mantle of providing the students a rostrum to flaunt their belletristic, oratory and expressive genius. Organizing competitions in extempore, elocution, debates, quizzes and so much has helped the club live up to and beyond the expectations for which it was set up.

Inspired by one of Maya Angelou's pieces, "Caged Birds Still Sing" explores resilience and hope when all seems bleak. Like the caged bird, the crows of NITC find solace in their dreams of freedom, and their voices become instruments of resistance against those who seek to silence them. Yet the caged birds, standing in solidarity, still sing.

The church exerts an undeniable force, shaping societal morals with subtle influence as the arbiter of righteousness, guiding salvation and condemnation. This dual power inspires benevolence and, at times, sanctions horrors. Within this intricate tapestry of faith, one must ask: can an institution led by individuals with divine authority yet bound by human imperfection ever achieve true justice?

In the latest edition of 'Sh**un and Elle,' we look at the recent disruptions at NITC's MBH-2 hostel. A common fine has been imposed on all residents, sparking outrage. While vandalism must be addressed, collective punishment has raised concerns about fairness. How can we strike the right balance between punitive measures and constructive approaches in such situations?

In Indian society, gender identities that do not conform to the binary norms of male and female carry a social stigma. For centuries, individuals within the transgender community have endured the harshest consequences of societal ostracization, experiencing discrimination, marginalization, and a lack of legal protection. Although significant strides towards progress have been made in the realms of trans rights, there is a greater need for awareness and acceptance of transgender people as equal and valuable members of society.

Public displays of affection (PDA) are often viewed as an affront to the orthodox moral code of our society. While the definition of what constitutes PDA has differed across time and societies, moral policing and humiliation faced by those who partake in it have always been a constant. As time progresses, it is necessary that we let go of these rigid dogmas that dictate how we express love.

Nihilism and Absurdism are philosophies that arose to help us navigate through this meaningless existence. While these ideas may seem inherently pessimistic, understanding their true essence can redefine our relationship with the world and help us find our own purpose and happiness.

We all have our own demons to fight but we don't have to do it alone. While we may not fully understand everyone's battle, or even our own, it's important to acknowledge the pain and struggle that comes with it. As this edition of Mental Health Awareness Week draws to a close, we wish to leave you with one thought: Always be kind to yourself. Take on the world, one day at a time.

Humans, being social animals, need a peer group to inculcate a sense of purpose and belonging. However, we may sometimes forsake our identity to fit into the group and avoid feeling isolated. Being conscious of the positive and negative effects of peer pressure can help us strike a balance and avoid the pitfalls of herd mentality.

In a society where presenting yourself as happy is the norm, we often trade authenticity for a smiling facade. Likewise, the compulsion to present your 'best face' on social media furthers the practice of suppressing your emotions. With the lines between genuine optimism and toxic positivity blurring, let's learn to embrace our emotions, in all their beauty and wonder.

Imposter Syndrome is extremely common and affects beginners and experts alike. Even when praised by well-wishers, the voice inside one's head that constantly doubts and dismisses accomplishments never seems to go away. While it's easier said than done, it's imperative to love oneself and appreciate one's hard work.
