IIM Kozhikode

Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode was established in 1997 as the 5th IIM of the country.

IIM Kozhikode is the fastest growing business school in the country. Spread over about 100 acres of land and situated in the historic city of Kozhikode, the campus is situated on two hillocks in the southern reaches of majestic Western Ghats, and is one of the most picturesque oxy-rich campuses in the country.

Operating as usual

IIM Kozhikode has yet again clocked a significant landmark in its fast growing global reputation. The Institute has leapfrogged 100 spots to be placed in the Top 151-200 Institutes in Business & Management Studies globally, as per the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject 2024, announced globally. IIM Kozhikode was placed in 251-300 for the subject wise ranking in 2023 and 351-400 band in 2022. To produce the rankings for this year the QS team had analysed the reputation and research output of almost 5,000 institutions. From this group, 1,561 were ranked across 55 narrow subjects and 5 broad subject areas, creating over 19,100 entries.

The showing comes in the back of the Institute improving its overall scoring 61.7 (2023) to 69.1 in 2024. An increase of nearly 12 percentage points. The rankings are based on five parameters for the participating Institutions and their respective weightages are: Academic Reputation (50%), Employer Reputation (30%), Citations per paper (10%), H-Index (impact and quality of work published by institute’s scholars) (10%). In a first, IIM Kozhikode showed marked improvement in all the 5 parameters in the 2024 Rankings which ultimately contributed to IIM Kozhikode’s overall best showing so far, in these subject wise rankings.

Speaking on the achievement, Prof. Debashis (Deb Ashis) Chatterjee, Director IIM Kozhikode, added, “IIM Kozhikode’s rise in the prestigious QS World University Rankings is a testimony to the Institute’s consistent and resolute pursuit of a holistic and intense approach to learning in the field of business and management studies. These Rankings are true reflection on IIMK’s commitment towards inculcating values in students, enhancing employer reputation, promoting research evoking thought leadership and offering distinct career outcomes to students. This will encourage us to doggedly continue in our endeavours to break new grounds globally and create distinct identities for Indian B-Schools.”

Globally IIMK now stands with Cardiff University (United Kingdom), Deakin University (Australia), University of Wollongong (Australia), The University of Western Australia (Australia), Keio University (Japan), Kyoto University (Japan), Lund University (Sweden), Maastricht University (Netherlands), University of Texas Dallas Richardson (United States), University College Dublin (Ireland), University of Zurich (Switzerland) – and many other leading Universities.

IIM Kozhikode prides itself in being a pioneer in introducing gender as well as academic diversity. Director IIM Kozhikode Prof. Debashis (Deb Ashis) Chatterjee speaks to Vikram Chaudhary from Financial Express (India) on how IIM Kozhikode became the flag bearer of Gender Diversity in Management Education in the country.

The director adds that it has been a conscious effort by the institute to encourage a healthy mix of students and welcome them to the IIMK fold. Back in 2012, we had adopted a policy of greater gender and other forms of diversity in IIMK. Prior to this the average intake of women in flagship programmes at IIMs was 8 to 10 percent.

Following year in 2013 (PGP 17), IIM Kozhikode was the first IIM to admit close to 54% women in our flagship PGP programme. It considerably raised the debate around the women in management and IIMK repeated history in year 2022 with close to 51% women for the PGP 24 batch at IIMK. Between these two peaks and the following years we have successfully achieved female representation close to 35-40% in the flagship programme.

Read to know more about how IIM Kozhikode believes that diverse, cross-cultural, cross-academic classrooms encourage critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity. Students feel encouraged to collaborate which in turn helps them learn from each other’s experiences, bouncing ideas off of each other and creating creative solutions. It increases their cultural awareness in a classroom setting, preparing them for a future career in a rapidly changing business environment.

Bias at the ballot box: The ways voters are influenced in elections 08/04/2024

Elections are upon India once again, and political parties are working overtime to woo us. From rallies to door-to-door campaigning to novel forms of digital messaging, they will pull out all the stops. But do we ever wonder why we tend to favour one party over the other?

Our faculty member Prof. Mohammed Shahid Abdulla has co-authored this analytical piece about psychological biases that affect voting typically, for leading business daily Business Standard. The authors argue that our voting decisions are often colored by powerful biases that fly under our conscious radar. The good news is that simply being aware of these biases can help us make more rational choices at the ballot box, even if the act of adjusting for such biases is a relatively imprecise one. Before casting our vote, let’s take a step back and analyze if we’re being unduly swayed by any of these impulses. After all, our vote shapes the nation’s future — so we must make an informed, bias-free choice that truly reflects the term ‘wisdom’ in the phrase ‘wisdom of the crowds’.

Delighted to share this review of 'Leadership Chronicles' in today's Words Worth column of Financial Express (India) by Madan Sabnavis, Chief Economist of Bank of Baroda.

The book authored by Director IIM Kozhikode Prof. Debashis (Deb Ashis) Chatterjee tells the story of a lifetime of teaching, learning and institution building.

The reviewer adds that "A field like education may look like a large edifice that one cannot alter. But the author's desire to bring about change is what he believed in and was able to implement it with success - so much so that these practices are now being adopted in other institutions." The 'Making of a Leader' review further goes on to summarise interesting facets of leadership decoded in this work by adding that it requires a lot of courage from leaders to ask themselves if they are indeed on the right track? He concludes by sharing that if the transformational experiments have worked well for the education sphere, it can very well be adopted in the other lines of businesses too.
