My Mother ❤️

Like any other day, when working at the Vianney ChildDevelopmentCentre, a few simple reminders of Binju Ma'am came to mind. But this time, they carried a deep sense of joy, turning an ordinary day into one of the most unforgettable in my life. It was a reminder that touched my heart, going beyond my role as a special educator.

That day brought tears to my eyes—tears of pride and gratitude. I realized more than ever that my mother (my Tessy) had taught me to write, all those years ago, without any special training or modern resources. She had been my first and most important teacher.

During an assessment with an 8-year-old child who struggled to write and hold objects, I recognized myself in him. I had faced similar challenges as the index fingers on both of my hands are non-functional. But at just two years old, my mother took it upon herself to teach me, giving me the training I needed and guiding me into a new world.

Curiosity filled my mind that day—how had my mother managed it all? I rushed home, eager to ask her. She told me she had started by using a stick from the communist plant in our yard, drawing in the sand to teach me. I remembered the gentle, firm touches of the stick—lessons that were firm but never painful.

The courage my mother showed that day, the immense task she took on with so much love, still fills me with awe. Her determination to teach me, to secure my future, has always been my greatest inspiration.

Today, I feel proud to be a special educator, helping children who face struggles similar to mine. But more than anything, I’ve learned that the influence and love of a mother can take a child further than any training ever could. I honour all the mothers who inspire their children, just as my mother inspired me.

Every day holds a special place in my heart. Even before I was born 29 years ago, I believe an angel was sent to this world just for me.

That angel is my mother ❤️
