The US government is now proposing a $100,000 fee on OPT — the program that lets international graduates work in the USA after graduation.

This broke today in the Wall Street Journal.

The context:
→ Last week, the $100,000 H-1B fee was fully blocked by a federal appeals court
→ Within days, the same fee is now being proposed on OPT instead
→ Duration of Status — ending open-ended F-1 stay — has already cleared White House review

Three changes. One week. All pointing in the same direction.

The USA is not closing its doors.

Week 3 immigration update 🇦🇺🇳🇿

One country raised its costs this week. The other created a new opportunity.

Here's what changed — and what it means for your plan.

🇦🇺 Australia — July 1, 2026:

The Department of Home Affairs increased visa fees with no prior warning.

Student Visa (Subclass 500): now AU$2,500 — up from AU$2,000
Temporary Graduate Visa (485): now AU$5,750 — up from AU$4,600

If your plan is to study and then work in Australia, your upfront visa costs alone have gone up by AU$1,650 across both visas.

This is not the first increase. Since 2022, the student visa fee alone has risen by 285%.

Australia is still a strong study destination. But the financial planning needs to reflect the real 2026 numbers — not what you saw on a blog post from two years ago.

🇳🇿 New Zealand — November 2026:

The government is launching a new Short-term Graduate Work Visa.

This is for graduates who finish their studies but don't qualify for the regular Post Study Work Visa.
→ 6 months of open work rights
→ Time to find employment and transition to a longer-term work visa
→ Applications open from November 16, 2026

The Post Study Work Visa is also being expanded to cover more graduate diploma holders.

One practical note — Immigration New Zealand is advising all students to apply at least 3 months before travel. Application volumes are up 20% this year and delays are being reported.

Plan early. The visa timeline is longer than it was last year.

🚨Week 2 immigration update 🇺🇸

"The US just ended Duration of Status."

That headline is spreading. And it's not accurate.

Here's the real update for Week 2 👇

The White House's OMB has cleared the final DHS rule that would replace Duration of Status for F-1 students.

That sounds big. And it is — but it is NOT law yet.

Two steps remain before anything changes:
→ Publication in the Federal Register
→ Then 30 to 60 days before it takes effect

Until both of those happen, F-1 students remain under the current Duration of Status system. Nothing changes today.

But here's what the proposal actually contains — and why it matters more than just a "4-year limit":

⏳ Fixed stay period instead of open-ended status
📋 Extensions required if your program runs longer than expected
🎓 Graduate students may not be allowed to change programs or transfer universities at any point
📅 Grace period after graduation cut from 60 days to 30 days
⚠️ Missing an extension deadline = risk of unlawful presence and possible multi-year re-entry bars

This is a watch-closely moment. Not a panic moment.
