PINACOL REARRANGEMENT
~is actually a type of an E1 elimination, although we rarely look at it from such perspective.
So, once you protonate one of the OH groups and form a leaving group, you’ll get a carbocation formation. In the example I have shown above, we get a tertiary carbocation. So, why would it rearrange further? 🤔 Simple—you’ll get a resonancely stabilized carbocation with a partial C=O bond character. And as the C=O bond is very thermodynamically stable, it will drive the rearrangement.
