Research Recognition | IEEE BSN 2026 🇵🇹 🎉

October 10, 2026 - Congratulations to Gayathri Anand Manikutty, Computing Education Research and Social Robotics Research Lead at AMMACHI Labs, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, on presenting her team’s Skill Intelligence research at the IEEE Body Sensor Networks (BSN) 2026 conference in Porto, Portugal.

Supported by the Department of Science and Technology’s Cognitive Science Research Initiative (DST-CSRI), the research, titled “Functional-Axis Calibration of Rokoko Smartgloves for Wrist Coupling Measurement: A Benchmark Against Optical Reference System,” explores how wearable smartgloves can more reliably measure wrist movement.

Why does this matter? Wearable technologies offer opportunities to study physical movement and skill performance beyond traditional laboratory settings. However, incorrect alignment of a device’s measurement axes can distort movement data. The research demonstrates how functional axis calibration addresses this problem, improving the reliability of wrist movement measurements and supporting more accurate biomechanical analysis.

This work contributes to AMMACHI Labs’ broader Skill Intelligence research, which investigates the physical and cognitive processes underlying skill performance to inform more effective vocational skills development.

Gayathri also served as a panellist at the IEEE Women in Engineering (WiE) session, connecting with researchers in biomedical science and wearable technology from Europe, the United States and India.

📢 New Research | When AI Meets Inclusive Governance

Can AI help make global policymaking more inclusive? And how can we ensure that every voice is not just counted, but genuinely heard?

Spearheaded by Dr. Victoria Ustenko, Associate Professor at Amrita School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (AmritaSSBS) and Research Head at the Center for Women's Empowerment & Gender Equality (AmritaCWEGE), this new collaborative study, published in Frontiers in Political Science, explores how AI-assisted analysis can support more inclusive citizen participation in global policymaking.

Drawing on the Civil 20 India 2023 International Grassroots Survey, involving 5,152 participants across 64 countries and 24 languages, the research reveals an important gap in global consultations.

Participants from the Global South wrote shorter responses than those from the Global North, with median response lengths of six words compared with nine. Among Global South participants with primary-level education, 74.2% provided answers too short to convey meaningful policy-relevant information.

This matters because collecting responses is not the same as understanding people’s experiences. When barriers limit how people express themselves, their concerns risk being overlooked. Analysing responses collectively can also hide important differences between communities.

The paper proposes a framework for using AI-assisted analysis more responsibly, helping preserve diverse perspectives rather than reducing them to broad trends.

The takeaway? Inclusive policymaking requires more than hearing more voices. It requires understanding what those voices are telling us.

💧 Rethinking Water Research: Whose Knowledge Counts? 🌍

Dr. Bhavani Rao R., Dean of the Amrita School of Social and Behavioural Sciences and UNESCO Chair for Women’s Empowerment and Gender Equality, will join an international panel of researchers for Conversations in Water: Whose Knowledge Counts?, hosted by Frontiers in Water.

The discussion will examine how power shapes research agendas and what counts as evidence, and how the knowledge of Indigenous, rural and marginalised communities, particularly women, can be better recognised in water research and governance.

World Health Organization (WHO) World Mental Health Day 2026 | Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change.

Our understanding of mental health grows through research, professional practice and human connection. Yet some of our most valuable insights also come from the lives we share and the experiences we carry.

Across our families, communities and workplaces, there are stories of struggle, recovery, resilience and care that can deepen our understanding in ways no textbook can fully capture. When we listen with compassion and make space for honest conversations, these experiences can challenge assumptions, broaden perspectives and help us understand what meaningful support looks like.

At Amrita School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, we recognise the value of bringing these perspectives into how we understand human behaviour, develop interventions and shape mental health services.

October 4, 2026 - A healthier future begins with the choices we make today.

Across eight villages in Odisha, 179 community members came together on Sunday, 4 October, for a Health Walk as part of the “Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat – 100 Sundays Campaign.”

From Tantichira and Kukupangi to Panchapada and Bramhaniapal, participants walked together through their communities, chanting Nasha Mukt Yuva slogans and sharing a simple but important message: Say No to Drugs, Choose Health, Choose Life.

Local elected village leaders also joined the campaign, lending their support and encouraging wider community participation and awareness.

More than a walk, the campaign created an opportunity for communities to come together, start conversations and encourage young people to make healthier, substance-free choices.

UNESCO World Teachers’ Day 2026 | 5 October

Today, we honour teachers. We honour those who dedicate themselves to patiently nurturing knowledge, curiosity, compassion and a deeper understanding of the world.

At the Amrita School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, we celebrate our faculty members who guide, challenge and inspire our students, helping them grow not only as professionals, but as individuals committed to serving society.

But the teachers in our lives extend far beyond the classroom.

We honour the teachers who have shaped us at every stage. Our parents and families, mentors and friends, colleagues and communities, and all those who have shared a lesson, led by example, offered guidance or helped us see the world differently.

We honour Life itself as a teacher: continually inviting us to learn, reflect, grow and become. 🌞

And, above all, we offer our deepest gratitude to our Chancellor and guiding light, Sri Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma), whose wisdom, compassion and vision continue to guide the work we do at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham and the values we seek to carry forward.

🇮🇳 Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat | 100 Sundays Campaign

Healthy Choices. Strong Communities. Drug-Free Futures.

October 4, 2026 - Across Morasia and Ratanpur in Bihar, Sarai Nooruddinpur in Uttar Pradesh, and Harsani in Rajasthan, communities came together with our field teams to take a stand for healthier, substance-free lives.

🤝 A pledge for drug-free families and communities.
🏃 Running and exercise to promote physical fitness and healthy living.
🇮🇳 A flag march carrying the message of a Nasha Mukt Bharat through the villages.
📢 Awareness and slogans encouraging responsible choices and collective action.

The activities brought together 107 participants across four villages and three states, turning a national campaign into grassroots community action.

The initiative carries forward Amma’s appeal for a Nasha Mukt Bharat, inspiring communities to take collective responsibility for healthier, safer futures.

30 September, 2026 🌿 Teaching Mutual Respect and Understanding as a Starting Point

As part of Amrita School of Dentistry, Kochi’s Deeksharambh Student Induction Program, 54 newly enrolled Bachelor of Dental Surgery and Dental Mechanics students took part in a session led by Radhika Shetty from the Amrita Center for Women's Empowerment & Gender Equality, exploring gender awareness, mutual respect and understanding.

Students explored gender roles in society, gender awareness and consent, alongside Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham's values and Chancellor Amma's role in women’s empowerment.

The session concluded with a reflection on compassion, control and charity and how these values can help foster greater empathy, respect and understanding in our everyday interactions.

🤖 AI Saathi | Learning AI by Using It

How can AI become genuinely useful in everyday work?

That was the focus of AI Saathi, a 16-hour basic AI literacy programme conducted by AMMACHI Labs from 13–16 July 2026 for members of the transgender community working across the beautician and allied sectors.

Using a phone-first, jargon-free approach, participants explored ChatGPT, Gemini and Canva through practical activities connected to their own work: from customer communication, captions and translation to promotional flyers and short video reels. They also explored AI safety, privacy and responsible use.

The emphasis throughout was on creating, not just learning. By the end of the certified programme, participants had developed their own promotional materials and portfolio pieces that could be put to use beyond the classroom. 🎓

AI Saathi reflects AMMACHI Labs’ continuing work to make emerging technologies more accessible, practical and relevant to diverse communities.
