PhD Opportunity: Gender Harmony and Community Resilience in Rural Karnataka

The School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, invites applications for a PhD project on Gender Harmony and Community Resilience: Addressing Gender-Based Violence in Kolar District.

Gender-based violence is not only a private household issue. It is also shaped by community norms, institutional response systems, local leadership, economic vulnerability, migration, and access to support.
This PhD project is grounded in the Gender Harmony Program, a community-based initiative in Karnataka designed to strengthen local systems for the prevention and response to gender-based violence, especially intimate partner violence.
The scholar will work in rural field contexts, particularly in Kolar district, with Self-Help Groups, Gender Point Persons, Panchayat representatives, ASHA and Anganwadi workers, police, health workers, schools, youth groups, and other community stakeholders.

The project follows a district-to-village cascade model: building institutional support, training local gender champions, strengthening referral pathways, supporting community dialogue, and helping Ward Members develop practical action plans for GBV prevention and response.

We are looking for candidates with an MSW or related social work background, preferably with Kannada language skills, fieldwork readiness, and sensitivity to working on gender-based violence, community resilience, and rural development.

This is a hands-on PhD opportunity for someone who wants their research to be deeply connected to community practice, institutional change, and real-world social impact.

Interested candidates are encouraged to apply through the SSBS PhD admissions process.

As India accelerates toward its goal of becoming a $7 trillion economy, the narrative of national development is shifting from physical infrastructure to the resilience of human capital. It is no longer possible to discuss economic prosperity without addressing the silent crisis of mental health. Current projections from the World Health Organisation and national economic surveys indicate that mental health conditions could cost India a staggering $1.03 trillion in lost productivity by 2030. In a nation where over 60% of mental health disorders affect individuals under the age of 35, the "youth bulge" that is meant to drive our GDP is simultaneously our most vulnerable asset. For India to sustain its position as a global leader, mental wellness must transition from a social secondary to a macroeconomic priority.

In this high-stakes environment, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is not just observing the shift; its students and campuses are actively leading the revolution. Through the School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Amrita has localized this global mission across its Nagercoil and Coimbatore campuses. These locations serve as more than just academic hubs, they are "impact centers" where students are trained to bridge the massive treatment gap, where currently nearly 90% of those in need do not receive care.

By integrating advanced psychological interventions with community-based social work, Amrita students are becoming the frontline architects of a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India), ensuring that as our economy grows, our collective mental strength grows with it.
