🌸 Mahila Utsavam | Celebrating Women, Community & Connection

As part of Phase 1 of the Gender Harmony Project, women across 10 villages in Bangarpet Taluk, Kolar District, Karnataka came together for Mahila Utsavam, meaning “Celebration of Women.”

Held between June 4 and August 5, Mahila Utsavam was the final day of the Digital Literacy + Life Enrichment Education (DL + LEE) sessions in each village. After learning and participating together, the women were given a space to connect, express themselves, have fun, and celebrate their shared experience.

🎉 Through traditional games such as Nadi Dada, Fire in the Mountain, and Bangle and Straw, women laughed, participated, encouraged one another, and built familiarity in a relaxed community setting.

💬 One of the key activities was My Life, My Voice, My Strength. Each woman selected a value such as courage, patience, caring, hard work, or friendship, and shared a personal experience connected to it. This created an opportunity for women to speak about their lives, listen to others, and recognise the strengths and experiences they share.

🤝 While simple in nature, these moments help build trust, confidence and connection. Stronger relationships within a community can create a safer environment for women to speak openly, support one another, and participate in addressing challenges together.

Mahila Utsavam was therefore an important part of Phase 1, bringing the learning and relationships developed through the DL + LEE sessions into a shared experience of connection and celebration.

With Phase 1 now complete, the Gender Harmony Project will continue into Phase 2, building on these foundations for deeper community engagement and lasting change.

We are grateful to every participant, Anganwadi worker, and community member who contributed to this journey.

"Attending a lecture on the theory of cooking will not remove hunger.

Knowledge alone is not enough;

to practice what we grasp intellectually is more important."
— Amma

The most meaningful learning doesn't happen through theory alone.

At Amrita School of Social and Behavioural Sciences, students step beyond the classroom to work alongside communities, apply what they learn, and gain the experience that shapes compassionate, capable professionals.

🌱 Gender Harmony | Phase 1 Complete Across 10 Villages

Between June 4 and August 5, Phase 1 of the Center for Women's Empowerment & Gender Equality's Gender Harmony Project was successfully completed across 10 villages in Bangarpet Taluk, Kolar District, Karnataka, engaging 318 women, including 180 Self Help Group (SHG) members and 138 non SHG participants.

Through the Digital Literacy + Life Enrichment Education (DL + LEE) curriculum, the two day sessions focused on building digital confidence, strengthening relationships, and creating spaces for women to learn, reflect, and participate together.

📱 Day 1 introduced essential digital skills, including smartphone use, WhatsApp, Google Maps, and other everyday applications.

🔐 Day 2 focused on cybersecurity awareness, followed by the Ideal Village activity. Participants reflected on the strengths and challenges within their communities and collectively envisioned practical solutions for building safer, more inclusive, and gender equitable villages.

Beyond developing digital skills, the sessions encouraged confidence, personal safety, informed decision making, and active community participation, helping women navigate both the digital world and their communities with greater confidence and independence.

Through the Ideal Village activity, participants looked beyond existing challenges to imagine the safer, more inclusive communities they can help shape together.

As the first phase of the Gender Harmony Project, these sessions laid an important foundation for deeper community engagement and the long term strengthening of community and institutional mechanisms for the prevention of and response to gender based violence.

The project received valuable support from the Government of Karnataka, whose collaboration in mobilising grassroots workers contributed significantly to Phase 1. We extend our sincere appreciation to the Anganwadi teachers, ASHA workers, Gram Panchayat members, and local stakeholders whose support made these sessions possible.

🌍 This initiative contributes to the following United Nations SDGs:
⚖️ SDG 5 – Gender Equality
📚 SDG 4 – Quality Education
🕊️ SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
🤝 SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals

Together, these first steps are helping build the trust, confidence, and collective participation needed for lasting gender harmony within communities.

🌿 Mangroves. Seagrasses. Coral reefs.
Together, they form the living foundation of healthy coastal ecosystems.

At AMMACHI Labs & The Center for Women's Empowerment & Gender Equality, our work in seagrass restoration and sustainable ocean livelihoods has shown us that protecting our oceans requires collaboration across communities, researchers, educators, and institutions.

That's why we're pleased to share this upcoming UNESCO World Mangrove Day programme hosted by the Amrita School for Sustainable Futures, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus

The event will bring together leading experts to explore mangrove restoration, blue carbon, coastal biodiversity, and sustainable coastal management; topics that closely complement our own work with coastal communities in around India.

Mangroves are among the world's most important "blue carbon" ecosystems, protecting coastlines, supporting fisheries, storing vast amounts of carbon, and strengthening climate resilience. 🌳

If these topics interest you, we encourage you to scan the QR code to register and learn more.

🌿 Did You Know?
🌍 Mangroves can store up to 5× more carbon than tropical rainforests.

🐟 Around 80% of tropical fish rely on mangroves during part of their life cycle.

🌊 Mangroves help protect coastlines from erosion, storms, and flooding.

🐠 Mangroves, seagrasses, and coral reefs form one of nature's most important coastal partnerships.

🏝️ Despite covering just 0.1% of Earth's land, mangroves provide extraordinary benefits for people, wildlife, and the climate.

🌿 Learning Beyond the Classroom | Wayanad Field Immersion

What does Cognitive Science look like in the real world?

For ten days in June, students from Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham's M.Sc. Cognitive Science, Learning & Technology program, Amritapuri Campus, travelled to Wayanad, Kerala, where they contributed to the Amrita Eye Care Champions Project, a community-based initiative working to reduce preventable blindness through early detection and awareness.

Working alongside faculty, healthcare professionals, and local stakeholders, students gained first-hand experience in community-based research and public health.

Their field immersion included:

👥 Stakeholder engagement with the Wayanad District Collector, district health officials, and local partners

📋 Field research, conducting household surveys, key informant interviews, and collecting data using digital tools including KoboToolbox

🏥 Community health engagement with Amrita Kripa Hospital, exploring pathways to strengthen eye-care services in tribal communities

🌱 Learning from local communities, including interactions with tribal knowledge keepers and visits to community-led livelihood initiatives

At Amrita, learning extends far beyond the classroom. By combining cognitive science, technology and field-based research, students develop the skills to understand real-world challenges while contributing to meaningful, community-driven solutions.
