And so the journey began for George Joseph Fernandez (GJF) alias Joseph Chooravilla. It seemed like it was God's calling – to listen to His greatness, to be influenced by people and events that seemed to be designs of the creator.

In 1947 when the country gained independence from colonial rule, GJ Fernandez went into business by setting up the GJF Construction Company. A commitment to the highest standards of workmanship, the urge to generate employment for a country plagued with poverty, and an unwavering faith have helped him become the man he is – winning accolades for his work, and the respect of his peers. Over the years he went on to build a business empire that is diversified into Civil Construction, Sea Food Processing and Export, Industrial Fabrication, and Marine Engines Distribution and Servicing. He did it all single handily across South India but remained humble and maintained a low profile.

It was Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who said, “Lives of great men all remind us, we can make our lives sublime, and, departing, leave behind us, footprints on the sands of time.” There is no better way to summarize the journey of Mr. GJ Fernandez. At the age of 90, he is still more active than most people 20 years younger and is still actively involved in his work. Though he has passed on the mantle of daily operations of business to his family, his pet project which he overlooks personally with a fine tooth comb remains the two charitable trusts he has founded which is dedicated to providing aid to the less privileged in terms of education, medical assistance, pensions to the retired, housing, and support to the less privileged in general.
