Kolahal Theatre Workshop Presents “Kala Jaadu”
Playwright & Direction: Nigiil Akkaraa
Set amidst the stark, evocative landscape of Rajasthan’s desert villages, Kala Jaadu delves into the lives of the rudaalis—women condemned to mourn for others while their own grief remains unacknowledged. Bound by oppressive traditions, their existence is shaped by rigid caste hierarchies, child marriage, the haunting reality of female infanticide, and the silent suffering imposed upon widows. What begins as a portrait of quiet endurance gradually transforms into a stirring narrative of resistance, as these women find strength in collective solidarity. Through powerful performances, poignant music, and deeply affecting dialogues, the play captures their journey from imposed sorrow to fierce rebellion. Challenging not just societal norms but also the invisible chains of fear and silence—the true “kala jaadu”—this production stands as a compelling tribute to resilience, dignity, and the courage to reclaim one’s voice. Featuring a dynamic ensemble including Sharanya Basu in the protagonist’s role, alongside Kakoli Das, Kalpana Das, Monika Mondal, Priyanka Neogi, Sneha Ghosh, Priti Jana, Rima Mukherjee, Tanusree Chakraborty, Upasana Bar, Aryaa Banerjee, Satyanath Chakraborty, Arko Sen, Arijit Mitra, Kaushik Singha, Subharun Basu, Sushil Das, and Sayantani Mukherjee, the play promises an emotionally charged theatrical experience.
