Ganesh Chaturthi, traditionally a domestic observance venerating Lord Ganesha as Vighnaharta and Buddhipradaayaka on his birthday, was elevated into a powerful instrument of socio-political awakening by Bal Gangadhar Tilak in 1893.By transforming the household ritual into a grand public celebration, he provided a legitimate forum for community congregation at a time when colonial policies suppressed political assembly.
Leaders by then understood creating a feeling of nationalism was only possible through a reinterpretation of history. As, Tarinicharan Chattopadhyay wrote in “Bharatbarsher Itihas”, “In earlier times, foreign travellers in India marvelled at the courage, truthfulness and modesty of the people of Arya vamsa, now they remark mainly on the absence of those qualities. In those days Hindus would set out on conquest and hoist their flags in Tartar, China and other countries; now a few soldiers from a tiny island far away are lording it over the land of India.”
Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s concept of nationalism in terms of its source and nature as also its characteristic, contributes towards the development of Indian identity. During the late 19th century, the British colonial government grew wary of large Hindu gatherings, as they often became platforms for nationalist mobilization. In 1892, certain local authorities restricted large processions and assemblies under general police powers (Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, 1861). When the British tried to curb public assemblies, Tilak Ji popularized Ganesh Chaturthi (1893) and later Shivaji Jayanti (1895) as public festivals to bring Indians together in defiance of colonial restrictions. These religious festivals became covert nationalist platforms where political awareness spread under the guise of cultural celebration.
This mass propagation of the festival of Ganesh chaturthi not only infused the festival with a nationalist spirit but also redefined it as an emblem of cultural solidarity, forging a collective Indian identity that strengthened the foundations of the freedom movement.

🇮🇳 KARGIL VIJAY DIWAS | 26th JULY 🇮🇳
On this day, we remember and honour the valour, sacrifice, and indomitable spirit of our brave soldiers who fought in the icy heights of Kargil in 1999.
They stood tall in the face of adversity, battling not just enemies but the unforgiving terrain and harsh weather — all for Bharat Mata.
Their courage wasn't just an act of war; it was a declaration that no force can shake the foundation of a united India.

At সমVAAD, we salute these real-life heroes who laid down their lives so we could sleep in peace, speak in freedom, and live with dignity.

Let us take a moment today to reflect on their bravery, to be grateful for their sacrifice, and to promise ourselves that we will strive to build the India they dreamed of.

🕊️ They gave their today for our tomorrow.
🫡 We will never forget.

Jai Hind! Vande Mataram!
