Gitika Trust cordially invites you to the 2024 Kalyani Sengupta Memorial lecture by Dr. Achintya Prahlad, Fellow at Faculty of Music, University of Cambridge on 'Shakti and the Nation: The Divine Feminine in the Eyes of Bharati and Nazrul'. Dr. Prahlad studies ethnomusicology with focus on Hindustani, Carnatic and Indian devotional music. Dr. Prahlad's talk will be based on his research findings published recently in the Yale Journal of Music and Religion, The Dance of Ādi Śakti (2021), which explores the works of poet-songwriters of the Indian freedom struggle C. Subramania Bharati and Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Smt. Kalyani Sengupta (1923-2008) was a vivid personality and participated in Gandhiji's call for Civil Disobedience Movement at the age of 10. Kalyani maintained a collection of Swadeshi songs (Swadeshi Ganer Bhandar) that she had learnt during the glorious years of India's struggle for independence. To honor Kalyani’s life and love of Swadeshi Sangeet, her daughter instituted the Kalyani Sengupta Memorial lecture to spread awareness on research being done on Swadeshi Sangeet and continue expanding the scope of Kalyani's Swadeshi Ganer Bhandar in contemporary times.
