Experimenter Showcasing works of emerging and mid career Indian and international artists. Experimenter was co-founded by Prateek & Priyanka Raja in 2009 in Kolkata, India.

With a multidisciplinary approach, the gallery is an incubator for an ambitious and challenging contemporary practice. The program represents some of the most critical contemporary artists worldwide. The program, rooted in dialogue and dissent, is considered to be a ‘pace-setter’ for its region, and extends from exhibition-making, to knowledge creation, through regular talks, performances, worksho

ps and through it’s much acclaimed, annual curatorial intensive – Experimenter Curators’ Hub. A second, more ambitious space was added in 2018, marking a deeper inquisition into the gallery’s realm of interest. The gallery attempts to expand the scope contemporary practice beyond the ambit of its expected role. In 2016, its artist-book publishing wing was launched followed by the Experimenter Learning Program in 2018 which enables learning in fields of contemporary and performing arts, curatorship, film, writing, language and social culture. In 2019, Experimenter Outpost, an iterative exhibitions program outside the physical gallery temporarily inhabiting disused, characterful spaces was formed. 2020 marked the beginning of Experimenter Labs an inclusive, experimental and multi-dimensional online platform in addition to the onsite gallery programming.

Over several years, Adip Dutta has immersed himself in the nightscape of the city, relooking at the sculpturality of form left behind in empty spaces of bustling footpaths, wares sold on streets tightly packed with tarpaulin, and discarded items of daily use. Often, he sculpts these obsolete construction tools, trees, and fallen branches in bronze, transforming these overlooked forms into archaeological relics that invite renewed attention. These works are responses to the things he encounters all around him, each containing multiple temporalities. They simultaneously reimagine the quest for the ‘archaic’—a theme Dutta often returns to in his practice—while maintaining an ongoing engagement with contemporary form.

Dutta’s solo 𝘚𝘬𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘭𝘴𝘦𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 opens this Saturday, 29 August at Tokaroun, Santiniketan, with an opening preview with the artist 11 am onwards. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with Musui Art Foundation.

Adip Dutta’s ambitious new solo 𝘚𝘬𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘭𝘴𝘦𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 opens next Saturday, 29 August at Tokaroun, Santiniketan.

Fragmented and ever-evolving, the city is transformed into a layered archive, one in which the archaic and the contemporary, the natural and the constructed, coexist in continuous dialogue. A meticulously constructed, surrealist portrait, in the form of ink works—of the densely packed, bustling footpaths, strewn with transient architecture and shanties—acts as a point of entry into the exhibition. These spaces, all of which Dutta has witnessed over time, narrate the story of a city, constantly evolving, shaped by its people.

The exhibition is presented in collaboration with Musui Art Foundation.

We are pleased to share that Ahona Palchoudhuri will deliver a public lecture titled 𝘈𝘯 𝘈𝘣𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤 next Thursday, 27 August at Experimenter – Ballygunge Place, Kolkata, 5:30 pm.

Music doesn’t offer a foolproof technology by which to feel moved. And yet, bits and pieces of musical grammar come to accompany our wounds, rites of passage, and lines of flight. In this lecture, Ahona will examine the unstable metaphysics by which our experiences of music repair, rearrange, or evade us. Her lecture will be based on long-term ethnographic research amongst the seasonal ecologies, caste-based labours, and spiritual and political fluctuations that neighbour musical life in rural and urban West Bengal.

Ahona Palchoudhuri is an anthropologist and ethnomusicologist based at the University of Cambridge. Her research examines music as a form of aspiration across contexts of ecological flux, erotic doubt, mediatized practice, and political tumult. She is currently working on her first book project, titled 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘤 𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘌𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘭𝘺 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘳𝘯: 𝘈𝘵𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘉𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘐𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘢. We are looking forward to Adip Dutta’s solo 𝘚𝘬𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘭𝘴𝘦𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, opening on 29 August 2026 at Tokaroun Tokaroun Santiniketan, Santiniketan. Spanning almost a decade of his practice, the exhibition traces the continuity of his enduring engagement with the urban landscape.

In 𝘚𝘬𝘪𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘌𝘭𝘴𝘦𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, an aerial vantage point emerges, providing a lens into Dutta’s mind where the city and its spatial, material, and formal elements are constantly transforming. The exhibition offers a nuanced way of looking at both corporeal and psychological landscapes as terrains layered by time and memory, attempting to draw meaning from what surrounds us yet often escapes our attention as the world remains in a constant state of flux, while re-evaluating how we find ourselves within a recalibrated environment.

Pallavi Paul’s Pallavi Paul solo 𝘛𝘰 𝘉𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘌𝘭𝘴𝘦’𝘴 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳 is on view at Te Tuhi, Auckland Te Tuhi until 4 October, 2026. Curated by Balamohan Shingade Balamohan Shingade.

𝘛𝘰 𝘉𝘦 𝘪𝘯 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘌𝘭𝘴𝘦’𝘴 𝘗𝘳𝘢𝘺𝘦𝘳 seeks a reparative arrangement. Refraining from sensationalism and the aestheticisation of suffering, the exhibition creates a tender space of listening. It responds to the fragility of the body—human, political, and architectural—by imagining the exhibition as a chadar: a fabric laid over the graves of loved ones and patron saints that offers refuge and healing.

The exhibition is commissioned by Te Tuhi in partnership with Satellites Satellites, with support from The Ministry of Ethnic Communities.

Anthropologist and ethnomusicologist Ahona Palchoudhuri introduces the core questions that will guide 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝗫𝗫𝗫𝗜: 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙄𝙨 𝙄𝙩 𝙏𝙤 𝙁𝙚𝙚𝙡 𝙈𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙙? 𝙄𝙄

Beginning with unpacking what is to remain 𝘶𝘯𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘥, she prompts us to think about the forms of inertness that creep into the ways in which we respond to the world and the fundamentally political act of organising or disciplining our moods while still staying true to the convictions of what we feel. Ahona also draws upon the concept of 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘢𝘷 in Indian classical music or stillness that is undistracted by the immediate vicinity of its affect(s) but still joined to a wider tempo of life.
