A Golden Retriever from Maldah. 5 years old. Name: OREO.
For the last 2 years, this dog has been on a biting spree that no one could stop.
A vet technician got bitten during a vaccination attempt. The procedure had to be aborted mid-way.
During another handling attempt inside a car, OREO bit an ex-Navy handler so severely that the finger bone got permanently deformed.
The family could not successfully vaccinate or deworm him for 2 full years.
When no one else would take this case, they drove 8 hours overnight from Maldah and appeared at our boarding.
That was 8 days ago.
--- What we found on arrival ---
OREO did not look like a dangerous dog at first glance. He is a Golden Retriever. The breed most people associate with gentleness, family warmth, and patience.
But the moment anyone attempted to touch him, groom him, or show him basic affection, the aggression was immediate and total.
We also noticed things that concerned us beyond the behaviour:
Abnormal breath. Sudden onset extreme food aggression in a dog that apparently did not show this before. Outright defensive aggression at any handling attempt whatsoever.
In our experience, when a dog develops sudden and severe behavioural shifts like this, especially in adulthood, the behaviour is rarely just behaviour.
There is almost always a medical component underneath.
--- Why we have not started training yet ---
This is the part most people do not understand, and most trainers do not tell you.
You cannot responsibly begin behaviour modification on a dog whose internal health has not been cleared. Bloodwork needs to be done first. If there is pain, infection, neurological involvement, or any systemic issue driving the aggression, no amount of training will fix it. You will be working against a biological wall.
This is our standard protocol for every critical case that comes to NCA. Medical clearance before training. No exceptions.
We referred OREO for a full veterinary assessment. Bloodwork is underway. Training has not started and will not start until we have that clearance.
--- What you are actually watching in this video?--
What this video shows is not training.
This is critical handling.
It is the foundational skill we develop and teach across every program in our curriculum. The ability to take a dog in full defensive aggression and bring him to a state of cooperation, safely, without force, without restraint theater, and without trauma.
OREO removes his own muzzle with complete nonchalance. He has done it so many times over 2 years that it has become a self-reinforcing pattern. Muzzle goes on, OREO takes it off, aggression escalates, handling attempt is abandoned. That cycle has repeated hundreds of times. It has become his established understanding of how these situations end.
Breaking that pattern, even temporarily, even just enough to complete a safe handling session, requires a very specific skill set.
Most facilities in Kolkata, and across India, handle cases like this by tying the dog against a railing or iron grill and pushing through extreme resistance until the procedure is done by force. The dog fights until exhaustion. The handler wins by attrition.
That is not handling. That is suppression. And it makes the next attempt harder, not easier.
We did it differently.
Multiple attempts. Muzzle removed each time by OREO. Growling throughout. No force applied. No physical restraint against his will. Handler calm and consistent across every attempt.
And eventually, cooperation prevailed.
--- This is day one of earning the right to begin.--
OREO's rehabilitation journey has not started. What happened in this video is the prerequisite to starting. Getting to a place where this dog trusts the process enough to stop fighting it.
That is the work most people never see and most facilities never do.
This is what NCA was built for.
