We the Professors and the students of JCC College(HISTORY DEPT.) fortunate enough to visit this archaeological museum on 11th of May 2023, as this is a place having lots of collections regarding the city’s cultural past and its reserves.
The museum has a neat collection of art and artifacts regarding its historic past. We were astounded by its collection of objects and pottery excavated during different phases of historical excavations. Truly educative and enriched with rich history of Bengal. One needs to visit this to gain experience on the unknown facts and figures in the history of Bengal.

Thanks to Equal Opportunity Centre-JCC College for organising an interactive session with students about "Making the Household Equal and Safe" (across the gender & s*xuality spectrum), in collaboration with Women's Cell, Deshbandhu College for Girls', in November 2022.
Principal, J.C.C. College, inaugurated the session. Three speakers helped students gain insight on how social structures as patriarchy, discriminate against and damage humans across the gender and s*xuality spectrum, with special focus on the area of household.
- Amrita Dasgupta (Director, Swayam) delved into issues of girls, women;
- Avinaba Dutta (Co-founder Pleqsus India, independent public policy researcher) helped understand discrimination against transgender persons and s*xual minorities;
- Deep Purakayastha (Director, Praajak) brought out complex ways in which patriarchy turns against men and boys.
We learnt more about struggles of the transgender people through a short documentary on Anuprabha Das Majumder, who could not be with us in person.
Students of both Colleges, and Jadavpur University participated actively through performances, interactions, art and experience sharing.
Discussions culminated into a clearer understanding of how to make the household space more equal and safe across gender and s*xuality spectrum. While everyone in the audience experience some "household" in some form or other, this session especially benefitted students of Gender and Sexuality courses offered by the Department of Sociology.

Durga Puja celebrates the victory of the goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura got recognition globally now.
This is the basis on which historian Tapati Guha-Thakurta, in her book In the Name of the Goddess: The Durga Pujas of Contemporary Kolkata (2015), traced the evolution of traditional pujo to its modern-day forms. Beyond religious aspects, she aimed to highlight the creative, cultural, and social economy that the grand festival generates.
It was with this acknowledgement that UNESCO, in December 2021, included the Durga Puja in its Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Guha-Thakurta was the historian behind this coveted tag, chosen by the Ministry of Culture to bring to light that the 10-day festival is a multi-layered, dynamic, and an integral aspect of Kolkata’s socio-cultural and political landscape.

Visit to Indian Museum (History Department,2022)

When reflecting on the history of photography in India, the names that come to mind are mostly of men : Lala Deen Dayal, Kulwant Roy and the likes. In the 20th century, Homai Vyarawalla emerged as first female professional photojournalist; her pictures are telling of an important period in Indian history. Around the same time, two women in Bengal, with their passion for photography, captured moments that reflected the inner worlds of women, in a country moving towards independence – unfortunately, these were lost to history.
The Jadunath Bhavan Museum and Resource Centre, Kolkata is hosting an exhibition of photographs by Debalina Mazumder and Manobina Roy (b.1919).
This exhibition brings together for the first time the photographic oeuvre of the twin sisters, Debalina Mazumder (1919 -2012) and Manobina Roy (1919 - 2001) from their respective family collections. Debalina and Manobina were initiated into the art of photography when they were just thirteen, by their father Binode Behari Sen Roy, a school principal in the princely state of Ramnagar in the United Provinces. They began their photographic practice together, often using each other and other family members as models, sent their work for photography salons from the late 1930s, and later, after their marriages, carried on their work separately within the spaces of their homes, carrying it only occasionally into a public domain.
Exemplars among early women photographers in India, Manobina Roy’s and Debalina Mazumder's work stands testimony to the many documentary and aesthetic uses of the camera within the worlds they inhabited.
