A distinct page from GCECT containing news, buzz, jobs & placement info, academic info and everything under the sun related to all the GCECTians! GCECT Newz!

The day us three friends realised that these four years of B.Tech in GCECT is going to be the best four years of our lives, we came up with the idea of this page. It's a page on our college that tries to bring together all the informations related to our college. It provides with all the news that's doing the rounds, latest happenings, like workshops or seminars etc. Articles written by teachers a

We, the three admins of this page, created it when we were doing our B.Tech. We graduated from GCECT in 2014 and from then the page is inactive. The main objective of this page was to provide academic news and info that can be shared publicly. It intended to share achievements of the college, placement statistics, motivational posts from alumni and professors.

We are looking for interested GCECTians preferably from 2nd and 3rd year who want to be a part of the page. If you're interested and have a decent writing skill, inbox us.

REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE

Recently someone created a stir in the otherwise peaceful and stagnant Facebook sphere with his not-so-peace-loving posts and remarks. The intensity of the incident was so high and dramatic that although online, but gave GCECTians a reason to stand united and shout out loud against, well, another GCECTian.

The student , Md. Golam Kibria, who made this come possible is in the CSE stream and got admission last year. He showed a never seen behaviour to reply to his seniors in one such tone that could better be described as rude and filled with dire chutzpah !

The whole issue started with a series of posts by Md. Golam on the forum which initially seemed like a student declaring a war against the education system. In his initial post he questioned in favour of the freedom of a student to choose his/her subjects for the course he/she enrolled for.
His next couple of posts also adressed the same theme. But his last post on 11 th November brought in the chaos.

He, a student in his 2nd year who failed in four subjects in previous year and skipped on one, categorized the students in general.

According to him, there are three types of students. Firstly, those who want to pursue higher studies from renowned institutions. Secondly, those who want a good job from a big company and study just what's needed. And thirdly, those who cheat on exams and on job CVs to get things done. Then he went on to explain how 'dropouts' are more sucessful than those with higher degrees.

This post didn't quite go down well with some forum members and soon the comment box got flooded with comments and replies. Most of them were from the college seniors. But surprisingly, Md. Golam showed no sign to back off but gave some not-so-pleasant replies to them. It angered the seniors and very soon the forum turned into a word for a word battleground.

So what made Md. Golam behave so rudely and harshly ? What gave him almost the status of a rebel ?
"I wanted to start a discussion on the freedom of a student to choose the subjects of his interest and skip on the ones he didn't like" he said.

He also added that he wants to study only the 'Computer Science subjects'. He doesn't think Electronics, Electricals and Mathematics in the 1st semester can be quite counted as 'Computer Science subjects'. And just because he wasn't given the opportunity to choose the subjects he liked, he failed them.

So, did he inform the college about his disliking towards some subjects?
"I didn't. But when they asked me why I'm careless in the classes, I said I'm not interested."
Didn't he know about the syllabus and that all the subjects in 1st year were non-electives ?
"I knew the syllabus even before my admission." Then why did he enrol for a course that has a bound syllabus in first place? He could have gone for some other courses with flexible syllabus structures.
In reply, he referred to a certain WBUT notice which he claimed removes the year-lag system.

But, when we contacted the placement officer of college, P. Guha, he clearly swiped away any such claims. He informed us just about the stream change procedure for which only 10% of the total intake with good marks are eligible. The WBUT notice, Md. Golam had been continuously referring to is not at all applicable.

But, why would he need to look up to a notice to prove his point that he should be allowed to study only the subjects he likes ?
"I was hoping that if the year lag process was absent then I could use it and wouldn't get hurt." So, he was actually looking for a loophole to get away with his failure ?
He said, "My case is different."

Then we asked him why he doesn't want to study those subjects. EE, EC are necessary to understand Digital Electronics and Computer Architecture. And Mathematics is considered as the pilar of Computer Science.
On asking this, he went on to give us a class on Computer Science.
"Digital electronics gate level e hoi, not in atomic level or in transister level." (Digital Electronics is valid at gate level, not at atomic level or at transistor level.") We didn't quite understand what he meant. He didn't stop but went ahead with more never-heard, never-knew-existed knowledge for us.
"If want to make matlab, octabe, then use need first year math, if u need web-application, database, language, apps, you may need automata, discreet math, not our first year math. Gate er sei part ta electronics er student der jonno! Taro niche atomic level as aluminium etc segolo material sc. & engg er jonno!"

We tried our level best to decipher the language he was talking in and came up with the best translation that we could make. It was, "If you want to make matlab, octave projects then you need that part of the maths that are studied in the first year. If you need web based applications or database applications you may need automata, discreet maths, but not those maths. That part of logic gates belong to the students of Electronics! The level beneath it is atomic level made of aluminium etc. Study of those belongs to the students of Material science and Engineering!"
We were stunned by this torrent of new-found knowledge and didn't know what and how to respond.

But the best part of his transcend knowledge came to us as a deep observation. "Science is vast but technology is specific. I think language (JAVA,PHP etc.) Database,Automata, Algorithm,Software, Internet,Artificial Intelligence is the real Comp. Engg."
We were so dumbfounded by the whole conversation that we could not say anything to help him correct his immense misconceptions which were ridiculous to the point of being Computer Scientifically challenged.

We asked him about his broken english though. Almost everybody on the forum ridiculed him for using meaningless english words and sentences for his posts. So, why doesn't he use bengali?
He said, "I heard english is our official language. So I try." That quite wrapped up our interaction with Md. Golam.

So, do the seniors who were bombarded on the forum agree with him ? Protyai Ghosal, a 2014 passout and currently working for Capgemini said, "Everything has a right time. India isn't Silicon Valley. He can't do the things he wants to do here."

But not everyone was so generous. Some were so irritated with this whole issue that they almost wanted to give him a piece of their minds.

Nachiketa Ray, an IISc alumnus and currently pursuing his research work in Belgium was also a victim of the loose canon that day. When we asked him if he thinks Md. Golam was posting these kind of things just to draw attention, he said, "Yes. I think he is trying to draw attention and he is arrogant. Again he is very frustrated because he failed and received dubious letters from WBUT."
At the same time he suggested all the students to settle this issue privately in a peaceful manner. And to Md. Golam, his friendly suggestion was to trust his collegemates and the college authority to solve his problem.

Ayan Deb, also a current year passout and working for Capgemini blaimed Md. Golam for all the chaos and was pretty cut-throat about it. "If someone shouts out loud just to cover up his failures, then I think he has psycological issues!" he said.

But the concluding remarks came from Srimoyee Bhattacharya. Batchmate of Ayan Deb and the topper of her final semester who is currently working for the same MNC as Ayan, wanted all to ignore such incidents.
Then she added "You know, after a hard day of work at office, this guy (Md. Golam) gave me my piece of entertainment." She agreed to the fact that he is one such guy who seems to have lost his facts.

But then she sounded optimistic. "I pray to god he may regain his senses!"
We all pray too. Fingers crossed.

CLASS WITH NO CLASSROOMS !!

There are students, there is a teacher, there are books, pens, chalks, dusters, a large sea-like syllabus, frustration of not covering even half of it... Do we need anything else for a good ninety minutes of class? Yes... The classroom!! There is no free classroom to take the class! This is exactly what happend today with the 3rd year IT students who chose Operational Research as their elective subject.

From the day one, these students don't have a particular classroom allocated to them. Sometimes the class was arranged in other classrooms, sometimes in the IT M.Tech. room (The cage like structure on the 2nd floor next to Edusat Lab. In case you havn't noticed it, its not your fault. Many people still haven't!) or sometimes in the library! The sole reason for this is, there are three optional subjects. Out of them, Operational Research and C plus plus are scheduled at the same time, although classrooms allocated for them is only one. So its pretty much 'who-can-get-the-room-first' kind of situation every day between the teachers of those two subjects. But today all the hell broke loose.

There was a power failure in the 3rd year classrooms. So, the Operation Research teacher (Mrs. Shyama Mandal) first told the students to come in the Central Computing Lab in the second building. When they got there, they saw, there is Java Lab class going on already. Then they informed Shyama Mam about this. She told them to come upstairs in the Electronics Lab. When the students went there, they saw the room is pretty small to accomodate them all. So, one of the students suggested if he would go to the Edusat Lab and see if it's free (Because other classrooms were either already filled up or scheduled for pre-scheduled classes). Mam permitted him and he went to the main building. But, very quickly he returned back and informed that the Lab is already reserved by C plus plus students. Although the teacher has not come yet, but the students are not willing to move! The Conference room was also booked, as there was a Microprocessor class going on in there. So, some students suggested to use the O.S. Lab on the second floor. Mam agreed to them and everybody went to the main building. There, after having the keys (see the picture above), they came to the O.S. Lab. But a big surprise was waiting for them there. They saw that the Lab was already taken by none other than Ceramic students and they are learning nothing but Database Management System! So, the Ceramic Technology students replaced the Information Technology students in Operating System Lab! After that, their search still continued and after another round of peeking through this door that door, they ended up in 3rd year CSE classroom. The power was back on but a sweeping staff was sweeping his heart out in the rooms. So, after a little struggle making way through the dust (which was literally looking like the mist in the middle of a scorching day, but the students were not in mood of enjoying the mystical view!), they finally found their classroom. The class was scheduled to commence from 12.10 pm which actually started from 1 o'clock.

Although today the students found their classroom but they know this thing is again going to happen next day also. As long as there is no logical class arrangement, they are ready to do some cardio exercise running around the college from this class to that class three days a week. But, on a second thought, may be as long as there is no pretty big developement in infrastructure, every year same problem is going to appear at its worst.

GCECT ACHIEVED THE AUTONOMY STATUS !!

"Autonomy is the only way for the growth of the college..." - Saikat Maitra, O.I.C. GCECT.

With a vast history of disputes between the Students Union and the college administration regarding GCECT
get

ting Autonomy, recently we made it. On 17.8.2012, GCECT is officially declared as an autonomous institution by the University Grant Commission (UGC). But there is a slight twist. It is not fully autonomous yet. It has received Academic Autonomy (Not Financial or Managerial) only for six years starting from 2012-13 session. If it shows enough utilization of resources and positive results, then the status will be further extended. Now according to the UGC guideline, our college is going to get twenty lakh rupees (Rs. 20,00,000/-) each year for next six years for academic purposes. In addition, we are free to design our own syllabi, restructure it or introduce new courses. Let us see how this Autonomous status is going to effect us in the long run.

With the Autonomous status, the college is going to get aid for guest or visiting faculty, development of learning materials, laboratory equipments, library purposes etc. Plus, it will get aid for arranging workshop and seminars. The financial support will be given for renovation and repairs or extension activities. But it is not supposed to lead to construction of a new building. According to the college administration, these things were not available previously from the government. The college will have four committees to ensure proper management of academic, financial and general administrative affairs. These committees are Governing Body, Academic Council, Board of studies and Finance Committee. While the Governing Body will take care of the core management of the institution, the Academic Body will be solely responsible for all academic matters. Board of Studies functions will include framing, reviewing and updating the syllabi for various courses while the Finance Committee will advise the Governing Body on financial matters.

The status of Autonomy is for six years for now. After six years it is eligible to apply for financial autonomy for another six years. After that, another six years for managerial autonomy is open to be applied for. Whether the status should be extended or not will be decided by a Review committee constituted by the chairman, UGC with a few experts who may visit the college to review the development. This committee may visit the college in between 5th and 6th year of autonomy. And only after being satisfied with the overall scenario, it will extend the status period.

For GCECT, although the evaluation and recommendation process will be done by the college, the awarding of the degrees to the students will be done by the parent university. If desired, the name of the college will be mentioned on the degree certificate.
So, untill this far autonomous status seems to be really fruitful for the college. But the Students Union has a little different take on this. From a very long time, the Union has opposed this step on the ground of possible increment in tution fees, misuse of financial support, possible decrement in Campuss Drives etc. But the college administration claims that the autonomous status will not lead to any rise in admission fees or tution fees whatsoever, as this autonomous status is only academic. Although in case of financial autonomy, there is a chance of it but the administration is willing to deal with it when it comes. For the official transparency, it has got four statutory bodies which are enough to maintain proper proceedings. The Officer in Charge of GCECT, Mr. Saikat Moitra says "The Autonomy is the only way for the growth of the college." He also adds "Take an example of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Many people are opposing it. But in the end, it s going to do good to us. The same way, this decision of Autonomy was not well received. But eventually it is going to help our college grow in the long run." The college administration hopes, as an autonomous institute, they will attract more companies to the campuss for Campuss Drives . Plus as an independent institution, the standard of education will increase in overall.
