Bengaluru Metro, operated by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), employs Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology to develop and operate its autonomous metro trains. This system enables fully driverless operations at Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4), the highest level of automation where trains run unattended without onboard staff intervention. CBTC is implemented across Phase 2 expansions, including the Yellow Line (Reach 5), Pink Line (Reach 6), and Blue Line segments (Phase 2A and 2B).
CBTC is a modern, radio-based signaling and control system that replaces traditional fixed-block signaling with continuous, bidirectional communication between trains, wayside equipment, and control centers. It uses radio waves (typically Wi-Fi or dedicated frequencies) to transmit real-time data on train position, speed, and status, allowing for precise train localization via onboard computers, trackside balises (beacons), and GPS-like positioning. This enables shorter headways (time between trains), optimized speeds, automatic train protection (ATP), automatic train operation (ATO), and automatic train supervision (ATS). At GoA4, the system handles all operations autonomously, including starting, stopping, door control, obstacle detection, and emergency responses, with oversight from a central Operations Control Centre (OCC). Key benefits include increased capacity (e.g., headways as low as 90 seconds), enhanced safety through collision avoidance and overspeed prevention, reduced energy consumption, lower operational costs by eliminating drivers, and improved reliability with predictive maintenance.
Implementation Specifics by Line and Provider
BMRCL has partnered with different suppliers for CBTC across lines, tailoring the technology to each corridor's needs. All implementations support GoA4 driverless mode, but initial operations may include attendants for a transitional period (e.g., 6 months) before full autonomy.
Yellow Line (Reach 5: RV Road to Bommasandra, 18.8 km, fully elevated with 16 stations):
Provided by Siemens Mobility as part of Phase 2. This marks India's first GoA4 CBTC deployment. The system includes electronic interlockings, ATP/ATS, and a telecommunication network for seamless integration. Radio-based tech provides real-time vehicle position/speed data, precise track location, speed control, and continuous updates to minimize delays and offer passenger info. It supports Unattended Train Operations (UTO), automating door operations, stoppages, and movement. Daily routines are OCC-commanded: trains "wake up" (lights/engine on), self-check for fitness, auto-wash, and enter "sleep mode" at night.Additional AI Integration: For the first time in Bengaluru Metro, AI monitors tracks via sensors and train-mounted cameras. Algorithms analyze real-time visual data to detect anomalies like cracks or wear, enhancing operational safety.Other Features: Hot Axle Detection System (monitors bearing temperatures, sends data to OCC); LCD dynamic route maps (show door ops and arrivals); front/rear-view cameras (monitor boarding and record for safety); Emergency Egress Device (passenger-activated door unlock via OCC/CCTV check).
Train Manufacturing: Six-coach sets (216 coaches total) by CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co Ltd (China) with Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd (India) under a ₹1,578 crore contract, aligning with Make in India.Testing and Operations: Prototypes undergo static/dynamic tests (e.g., signaling, collisions, obstacles), system integration (signaling/telecom/power), and statutory approvals from RDSO and CMRS. Revenue service started with 7-8 trains at 15-minute frequencies, aiming for full ops by late 2024/early 2025, connecting south Bengaluru to Electronic City IT hub. Provided by Alstom under a €96.2 million contract, covering design, supply, installation, testing, commissioning, training, and 5-year maintenance. Uses Alstom’s Urbalis™ CBTC, developed in Bengaluru, for GoA4 across 80.39 km, 50 stations, and 3 depots. Interfaces with BEML's 6-car trains (53 total), managing headways/safety.
Features: Full-height Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) at underground stations (first in Bengaluru Metro) and half-height Platform Screen Gates (PSGs) at one at-grade station; Urbalis Vision™ at OCC (Baiyappanahalli) and BCC (Peenya) for command/monitoring; HealthHub™ predictive maintenance (data analytics for asset life prediction, minimizing downtime); rail cyber security (certified processes against threats).
