In charge of a dedicated and dynamic faculty, the Department of Chemistry carries on the challenging task of training its students to be competitive in a global environment. The teaching methods employed are in the form of classroom lectures, smart classroom lectures with visual mode using powerpoint presentation and practical classes in the laboratories. The theoretical papers consist of Organic

, Inorganic and Physical Chemistry and also Biochemistry and Analytical Chemistry as part of Skill Enhancement Course(SEC) and Disciplines Specific Elective(DSE) courses as per CU CBCS syllabus.The Practical courses include Inorganic Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis, Inorganic Synthesis, Organic Qualitative Analysis and Synthesis, Physical Chemistry Experiments, Biochemistry and Analytical Practical, Instrumental Methods of Analysis and Computer Programming & its application to Chemistry.In an incessant endeavour to inspire the students and expose them to contemporary research, the department organizes seminars every year, where renowned scientists from different parts of India deliver scientific lectures. Furthermore, the department organizes visiting tours to various laboratories of well- known research institutes in Kolkata, to expose the students to various instrumental facilities and to motivate them to chemistry research work. A departmental seminar by the students of each year has also been introduced to inspire the students and to help them learning the basic footsteps towards an accomplished teaching and research career ahead. The basic infrastructure available in the laboratories are Spectrophotometer, Spectro-colorimeter, Melting point apparatus, Rotary Evaporator with chiller and vacuum pump, Modern Fume Hood, Oil bath with temperature control, Heating mantle, magnetic stirrer, steam bath, Digital Balance, TLC Apparatus, Multiple suction pump, Conductivity meter, pH meter, Hot air oven, Centrifuge, and Computer Server. in IITs, IISc Bangalore, IISERs as well as in other Universities of repute like Calcutta University, Jadavpur University, Kalyani University, Presidency University and so on. The department provides a nice intellectual environment for the curious and inventive youngsters. Faculty members are available to the students as academic advisers, for consultation about their syllabus, courses, and to discuss chemistry, scientific facilities and career opportunities.
