College counselling isn’t just for the “focused” kids. 📚

A lot of parents assume it’s only for students who already know they’re going abroad, or who are already academically strong.

It isn’t. Counselling is for every kid.

Here’s why: good decisions come from knowledge, not guesswork. In 12 years, I’ve learned that the “obvious” path a student picks is often only obvious because it hasn’t been researched.

I want every student to know what their options actually are — before they pick a path.

A glimpse of where that exploration has led our students this year 👇

🇳🇱 Netherlands — hands-on degrees in Aviation, Logistics, Sports Management
🇺🇸 USA — Liberal Arts Colleges, where a major isn’t a life sentence
🇯🇵 Japan — English-taught degrees in Robotics, Game Design, Data Science
🇭🇰 Hong Kong — Business Analytics, FinTech, AI — often with major scholarships

And that’s just four of the countries we’re talking about this year.

If your child isn’t sure yet what they want, that’s not a problem. That’s just where we start. 💬

Send us a DM if this sounds like where your child is right now.

One of the biggest misconceptions about studying abroad is that a smaller budget means smaller opportunities.

Every year, I meet families who begin the conversation by apologising for their budget.

“The US isn’t possible.”

“The UK feels too expensive.”

But a finite budget doesn’t necessarily mean fewer opportunities. It often just means looking beyond the familiar names.

This year, our students have gone on to universities including NUS, NTU, HKU and HKUST—including one on a full tuition scholarship.

Hong Kong and Japan offer generous scholarships for international students, and excellent universities exist across Asia at a range of budgets.

The goal isn’t to find the most expensive university.

It’s to find the one where your child can thrive.

If your family’s budget is shaping your study abroad plans, don’t assume your options are limited. I’d be happy to help you explore pathways you may not have considered.

Most college counselling still starts with the wrong question:

“What will get my child in?”

It’s an understandable question.

Admissions have become increasingly competitive. Students feel pressure to build the “perfect” profile, while parents are trying to make sense of an ever-growing list of options. In that environment, it’s easy to optimise for admission rather than for the student.

After eleven years as a college counsellor, I realised I needed to ask a different question:

Who is this young person, really?

In 2023, while continuing to work full-time, I enrolled in UCL’s distance learning programme in Child and Adolescent Psychology and Neuroscience in Practice. I wanted a deeper understanding of how adolescents think, develop and make decisions.

It changed the way I counsel.

Sometimes that means trusting a student’s instinct that she’s simply not suited to the path everyone expects. Sometimes it means helping another realise that a passion doesn’t have to become a profession for it to remain an important part of her life.

On the surface, these seem like small decisions.

But education is a series of decisions that gradually shape a life. The more those decisions come from self-awareness rather than comparison, the more likely students are to choose environments where they can thrive—not simply fit in.

When students understand themselves, they make more deliberate choices: what to study, where to study, what opportunities to pursue and, eventually, what kind of work they want to do. They are more likely to build careers that reflect their strengths and values, often finding niches where they can make a meaningful contribution because they’re not simply following the path that appealed to everyone else.

For me, that’s the purpose of college counselling.

Admissions matter. But they’re only the first step. The bigger goal is helping young people make thoughtful decisions that lead to lives and careers they can genuinely call their own.

Our role isn’t to hand you a ready-made path, but to help you build doors—doors that lead to growth, discovery, and opportunities you may not have imagined yet.

Because college applications aren’t just about getting in.
They’re about becoming ready for what’s next. 🚪
