THE FEATURED STUDENT – SANJUKTA DEY, FOUNDATION COURSE - "THE HANJIS"
Udaan School of Photography, Kolkata is beginning to use this space in the page to frequently showcase the work done by our students after the completion of their course. We request all our students to kindly send us their 10 or more best images. There is no deadline of submission, just keep on sending them to [email protected]
Every month we will select the best works and showcase them in “The Featured Student” section. To begin with we have selected the work of Sanjukta Dey, Foundation Course, and following is her experience and her photography :
“An entrepreneur by profession, addicted to the Himalayas and gym, passionate about travel, photography and a Nat Geo ju**ie fairly sums me up.
Some years ago what started as a desire to click decent vacation photographs kept growing until I found myself enrolling in Udaan Photography School after much deliberation. What drove me was to be able to rise above my own mediocrity, to move on from the zero technical knowledge zone to a slightly better place and to mentor under a veteran. Upon completion of the Foundation Course, I found myself immensely interested in telling stories of the poor and the oppressed; those who do not have the voice to state their own anguish and demand their basic rights.
In early April this year found the perfect opportunity for the same. The northern part of Kashmir has been ravaged due to the uprising of the militant forces and separatist movements for past two decades. In this corner tucked away is the Wular Lake; a Ramsar site and Asia’s largest freshwater lake. On the shores of this lake lives the indigenous fishermen community, the Hanjis. Plagued by lack of education and ignorance their life style has remained unchanged for generations. My attempt was to capture their daily life through a series of photographs.”
