The children make their own choice of studies.

One the essential features of Montessori homes and classrooms is that children have choices. Why is choice is so important in school?
In both Montessori homes and classrooms, we intentionally provide opportunities for children to make choices. Even toddlers can select between different toys, decide whether to wear red or yellow socks, choose their snack (cucumber or dry fruits), and opt to sit on either mama’s lap or daddy’s knee. This emphasis on choice recognizes that life is inherently full of decisions, and allowing children to make these choices fosters independence and self-awareness.
Each person possesses unique gifts and talents. Some may excel in reading, others in mathematics, and still others in mechanical skills. Just as one person might be a good at music, another might be great at sports. Our individuality sets us apart, and the same applies to our children.

Consider a few children of the same age. Despite their identical age, they exhibit differences in height, weight, and abilities. Some develop early, while others bloom later. Learning styles vary too—some thrive through visual input, others through auditory learning, and some through tactile experiences. Their interests diverge, and readiness for specific tasks varies widely.

In Montessori education, this understanding of individual differences guides the approach. Children are encouraged to explore at their own pace, choosing activities that align with their unique interests and developmental stages.

Maria Montessori recognized these diverse learning needs and established an environment where children arrive each day and select what they want to work with. This approach empowers them to engage with their interests and learn at their own pace.

Freedom of choice becomes a habit of the child's mind.

Teachers act as role models :

The Montessori teacher is pivotal in unlocking each student’s potential and fostering a lifelong love for learning. She/he embodies the roles of an observer, guide and a facilitator.

Observer
Observation is crucial in Montessori education, and the teacher plays the role of a keen observer of each child’s progress, interests, and challenges. Through systematic observation, the teacher gains valuable insights into the child’s learning style, strengths, and areas needing further support. This allows the teacher to adapt the learning environment, tailor activities to individual needs, and provide timely interventions when necessary.

Guide
The Montessori teacher acts as a guide, steering children through their educational journey. Instead of being the primary source of information, the teacher facilitates self-discovery and independent learning. By carefully observing and understanding each child’s needs and interests, the teacher provides personalized guidance, offering the right materials and activities to support their development.

Facilitator
In the Montessori classroom, the teacher serves as a facilitator, crafting an environment that promotes optimal learning experiences. They design the classroom layout and select materials that encourage exploration, engagement, and independent thinking. The teacher fosters collaboration, respect, and a sense of community among the children. By creating a nurturing and stimulating environment, the teacher empowers students to take charge of their learning and excel academically, emotionally, spiritually, physically and socially.

The children make their own choice of studies .

In a Montessori setting, you might see a younger child observing an older one, a student washing hand, or another dusting shelves. What you won’t see is all children engaged in the same activity simultaneously. Each student selects activities based on their interests, not on the teacher’s or anyone else’s expectations.
Freedom of choice enables children to make their own decisions. In a Montessori classroom, the teacher carefully prepares the environment and, through observation, determines which activities to introduce to each student. The child then has the freedom to choose the materials they wish to engage with.
Sometimes, children may struggle with making choices. A student might tell a teacher, “I don’t know what to work on,” or a teacher might notice a child wandering and disrupting others. In such cases, the teacher guides the child in developing decision-making skills, possibly by offering a choice between two activities.
Montessori Method is distinct from traditional play-based preschool programs. Central to this method is the concept of freedom, which includes freedom within limits, freedom of movement, and freedom of choice. These interconnected ideas are crucial for respecting the child, one of the core principles in Montessori education.

Why is freedom of choice so important in Montessori classroom?

Consider two four-year-olds in the Language area: one working with Large Moveable Alphabet box, and the other working on digraphs. Each has chosen materials that suit their current learning needs. Forcing a child to work on materials when they’re not ready or one which he/she has already mastered, does not support their individual growth.
Families can also foster this principle at home by encouraging children to make choices in personal care, household tasks, and play. This support helps children become more independent.
Every child is unique, learning at their own pace and in their own way. Allowing children to make their own choices helps them meet their individual needs and teaches them that their decisions matter. This respect for the child’s choices is a cornerstone of Montessori education.

“The charm of social life is in the number of different types [of people] that one meets. Nothing is duller than a Home for the Aged. To segregate by age is one of the cruellest and most inhuman things one can do, and this is equally true for children. It breaks the bonds of social life, deprives it of nourishment.” The Absorbent Mind by Dr. Maria Montessori

Living and thriving in a community—what Montessori calls a “society by cohesion”—involves peaceful and collaborative interactions. When individuals prioritize the group’s needs alongside their own, it fosters unity, love, and shared objectives. This is why mixed-age groups are a cornerstone of the Montessori environment.
As social beings, children benefit from spending three or more years in a community with a diverse age range (typically three years). This setup nurtures a child’s ongoing and genuine social experience.

Interacting with peers of varying ages and abilities helps children understand their own needs and achievements in the context of others, free from the pressures of direct competition. In these mixed-age groups, children form lasting relationships with each other and their teacher, fostering a sense of protection and care among them.

Benefits of Mixed-age classrooms within the Montessori age groups

• Self-paced learning
• Comfort of the children
• Sense of community
• Children get the chance to be with the experts
• Academic benefits – demonstrate better reading, language and maths skills
• A well-behaved class

The Montessori Method is 100 years old.

As educators and parents, should we adhere to a method established over a century ago? Haven’t times evolved, necessitating a change in our educational approach? Surprisingly, the answer is no! The enduring relevance and effectiveness of the Montessori method stem from its foundational principles. The primary goal of a Montessori classroom is to nurture a child’s independence, enabling them to seamlessly integrate into their culture. This universality is why the Montessori method is embraced globally. The practical life activities vary worldwide, reflecting local customs. For instance, in India, we teach children how to make chandan paste as a part of the custom in almost all the Hindu pujas. However, this lesson wouldn’t be as pertinent in a place like the USA.

Maria Montessori emphasized the importance of both physical and psychological development beyond just cultural adaptation. Montessori materials are designed to be tangible and involve movement, reinforcing the connection between physical activity and understanding concepts. Additionally, Montessori valued children’s interaction with nature, making the seamless indoor/outdoor flow of the Montessori classroom unique and special, fostering a connection with the environment.

At the heart of Montessori is love. Respecting children as individuals is fundamental, with the belief that each child controls their own path. Feeling loved and welcomed builds confidence. Sometimes, love involves setting boundaries to help children find their inner voice. While it can be challenging to be firm, every interaction with children is rooted in love.

You might observe some human tendencies in your child: order (organization), orientation, exploration and curiosity, communication, work and concentration, movement/activity/manipulation, repetition, exactness and calculation, abstraction, imagination, and self-perfection.

What is Montessori?

The Montessori philosophy is built on the idea that children are naturally capable of self-directed growth. Children can explore, learn, and thrive at their own pace by providing an environment tailored to their developmental needs. This approach helps them discover their own path and reach their full potential.

Many people associate Montessori with early childhood education, but its principles extend far beyond that. Montessori provides a lifelong approach to learning, supporting children from infancy through adolescence and even into adulthood. It’s not just a method of schooling; it’s a philosophy that nurtures natural development at every stage of life.
The Montessori method, named after Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician who developed this educational approach based on her observations of children, has been in practice for over a century. It emphasizes fostering a child’s innate ability to learn and grow in a supportive environment tailored to their developmental needs.

The early years of a child’s life are crucial for developing not only academic skills but also essential abilities like concentration, perseverance, independent thinking, and social interaction. When children receive the proper support during these formative years, they grow into self-motivated adults who love learning, think creatively and flexibly, and are mindful of others’ needs, fostering harmony throughout their lives.

The Montessori approach offers:
• An environment tailored to meet the unique needs of each developmental stage.
• A knowledgeable adult who understands child development and guides children to discover their natural path.
• The freedom for children to pursue their own development according to their timelines.
