Dear Students,

I have an exciting announcement for all Physics M.Sc. and PhD aspirants! Together with the brilliant coder and developer Abir Ivan Sarkar, I have developed “Phtrix,” an Android app designed for CSIR NET, GATE, JEST, and IIT JAM aspirants.

Phtrix makes studying as enjoyable as playing a game. You’ll answer questions, complete levels, and increase your score. The names of the top 20 scorers are displayed on the scoreboard, so you can compete to see your name there. For each correct answer, you earn 1 point, and for each incorrect answer, you lose 0.25 points. Incorrectly answered questions will reappear, giving you another chance to get them right or report any errors in the answer key.

You can track your accuracy (the percentage of correct attempts) to self-assess your progress. We have included questions from 2010 to 2023 for the CSIR NET, GATE, JEST, TIFR, and IIT JAM exams. These questions are divided into topic-specific quizzes, each containing 10 questions. We’ve already uploaded complete sets for Mechanics, EMT, Quantum, Thermal, and Statistical Physics. Part 1 of Mathematical Physics is available now, with Part 2 coming by June 4th. All remaining topics will be uploaded within June.

Over 500 students have already downloaded the app and are using it without any issues. You can find the download link from the Google Play Store below and in the first comment.

Please share this post as widely as possible!

In this article I'll discuss the Challenges of Online Teaching: the Problems, Causes, and Potential Solutions

Problem 1: Engagement

Very few students remain attentive throughout the class. At least 60% of them become distracted in the middle of the lesson. Some assume that they can watch the videos later, yet often, they fail to do so.

Problem 2: Desire to Learn with Minimal Effort

Students expect to learn very quickly without putting in much effort. Most spend an excessive amount of time on platforms like WhatsApp and Instagram, dedicating only a few hours to study. As a result, when they begin to watch a recorded or live class, they perceive it as a waste of time. Some have even shared this sentiment with me directly.

Problem 3: Consistency in Studying

Many students start with great enthusiasm, but lose their momentum within a week. This is evident in their sporadic live class attendance and inconsistent homework submission.

My observations indicate that if 10 students attend the first class, within two weeks only 5 remain, and after a month only 2-3 continue to attend.

If 10 students submit the first assignment, only 5 submit the fifth, and merely 2-3 submit the tenth.

Problem 4: Depression

After 1-2 months, many students start to feel overwhelmed and begin to doubt their ability to pass the exam. Additional issues like familial conflicts and personal heartbreaks further complicate the situation.

Now, I'd like to discuss the root causes of these problems.

1) There are countless distractions and entertainment readily available. Why should students choose to study when they can easily watch Netflix or engage in social activities on WhatsApp?

2) The reliance on shortcuts and quick fixes has become a default approach to achieving goals. Students are searching for a magic pill, swallowing which would solve everything.

3) Core educational values, such as trust in, respect for, and adherence to the teacher's guidance, have been largely forgotten.

4) The lack of a life philosophy - many students don't have a clear understanding of their life's purpose. If the goal is unclear, where will the motivation come from?

Now, onto potential solutions...

1) Enhance Engagement: We need to devise new strategies to bolster engagement. Some initial ideas include:

i) While I generally handwrite everything on PPT by using pentab, mimicking our old chalk and blackboard teaching, I believe it would be more effective to increase the use of prepared and typed content. This would not only save time but also enhance readability.

ii) A new, game-based approach to assignment submission could make the process more engaging. Leveraging the psychology of gaming, students could experience competition and achievement. The act of completing an assignment could be likened to conquering a level in a game and increasing their score. I've already assigned the task of creating such a program to a talented individual named Abir Sarkar. I'm optimistic that we will design something effective.

iii) Please feel free to contribute any additional ideas. You can either leave a comment or send me a private message.

2) Reinforce Core Values: I've been trying my best to instill these values, but I cannot do this alone. While it may seem unlikely that society will suddenly undergo a profound shift in thinking, it's important to remain hopeful.

Remember how the tales of Panchatantra began?

Once upon a time, a king had children who resisted formal education. The king enlisted the help of Pandit Vishnusharma, who told the princes stories that subtly imparted wisdom and knowledge. Over time, these stories equipped them to govern a kingdom.

Can we adapt this approach to the present day? Can we devise methods to teach students ethical values, the importance of hard work, the significance of setting life goals, and the necessity of having faith in their teachers and in themselves?

I've been contemplating this a great deal. If you've made it this far in reading this article, I want to express my gratitude. I encourage you to share your thoughts either in the comment section or through a private message. Your perspective could be invaluable in overcoming these challenges and improving the state of online education.

11/06/2023

Dear Community,

Reflecting on Abhijit and Anindita's inspiring posts, I felt compelled to share a few thoughts and updates with you.

At COVID times, I have freely shared all of the resources I curated up until August 2020. These encompass comprehensive notes and solutions to previous year papers. You'll find these treasures of knowledge in the previous posts on our very own 'Physicsguide' page.

As you might already know, I offer structured online coaching for CSIR NET and IIT JAM. But these sessions, I must clarify, are primarily for Bengali-speaking students. It is not a matter of favoritism, but a humble admission that I can pour my heart into teaching most effectively when communicating in my mother tongue. If you're fluent in Bengali and are interested, feel free to reach out to me on 8116523464 or 8981561352 to enroll in the next CSIR NET batch.

Now, what about our non-Bengali speaking students, you may ask? A solution is brewing as we speak.

My team and I are in the process of designing a dynamic new application. Its purpose? To make you engaged by problem solving and competition among yourselves.

You will be able to see how many of students are solving how many problems, and how much progress you all making. You will be assigned points and a scoreboard will be always live where you will be able to trace each other performance and feel competitive among yourselves. This application will be open to all Indian physics students.

Patience is a virtue, they say. As I, along with my brilliant app developer, are channeling our complete energy and focus into perfecting this app, I request your understanding and patience (I've even pressed pause on writing my Quantum Book!).

In 2017, I created Physicsguide: CSIR NET, GATE, JAM, JEST group and Physicsguide page with the intent of fostering vibrant discussions among physics students. Now, we're evolving towards becoming a platform that encourages problem-solving and competition.

I am incredibly grateful for your unwavering support and would like to extend a special thanks to Arka. His dedication to managing physicsguide for the past three years has been commendable.

Stay tuned, exciting times lie ahead!

Dear Aspiring Physicists,

Tomorrow, you will take an important step in your journey, the CSIR NET Physics exam. This test is not only a milestone but also a testament to your dedication, hard work, and love for Physics.

We want you to know that we believe in you. All those hours of studying, all those solved and unsolved problems, they were preparing you for this day. You have learned, grown, and become stronger. Now, it's time to showcase your knowledge.

We want you to remember that success is not a destination, but a journey. This exam is a part of your journey, not the end. If things don't go as planned, don't lose heart. This is not a 'do or die' situation. The universe of opportunities is vast, and this is just one star in the galaxy.

So, when you hold that pen tomorrow, take a deep breath. Smile, because you are prepared, because you are capable, and because you are more than a single exam. Walk into that examination hall with a calm and clear mind. Give your best, and leave the rest.

Remember, an exam is just a test of what you know, not who you are. You are a future physicist, a future explorer of the universe's mysteries, and no exam can define your potential.

Best of luck and effort for your CSIR NET Physics exam. Finally wish all the computers function well.

- Your Physicsguide Family

Frameworks I have considered for my upcoming Quantum mechanics book till now.

1) Every topic should have a motivation section at the beginning. That will involve some application of the topic

2) After the theory discussions and solved examples some critical thinking questions should be provided.

3) A set of project works that should encourage research at the undergraduate level should be provided. Projects should be open-ended type including some literature surveys and report preparation. A few sample projects be like ----

"Uncertainty principle in particle masses in nuclear and particle physics: Explore how energy-time uncertainty relation plays a crucial role in measuring masses of particles in nuclear and particle physics"

"Quantum Transport in Nano-devices: Nanoscale devices often exploit quantum mechanical phenomena, such as tunneling and confinement, to operate. Investigate how potential steps and barriers influence electron transport in nano-scale devices, such as quantum point contacts or quantum dot devices"

4) After every chapter there will be a large number of multiple choice, multiple select, and numerical answer type questions should be provided. Questions from previous years' competitive exams like JAM, JEST, NET, GATE, TIFR, etc along with my self-framed questions should be there.

5) Use of computer as much as possible. Be it plotting of wave functions or finding the energy eigen values for potentials whose analytical solutions are not possible.

6) A large amount of exercises should be there at the end of the chapters. I'll try to make the exercises as innovative and as complete as possible.

Anything else you want to add? Please either comment below or inbox me.

Finally, is there anyone who wish to volunteer and participate in this exciting journey.... ? Please comment/ inbox.

Every course gives birth to some notes and materials. Thereafter, if the instructor do some more work, a book may be born.

As I'm teaching Quantum Mechanics from scratch right now, I need to decide whether I also organise my notes and materials in a form of a proper book or not.

What do the students say? Do we need another quantum mechanics book to be written?
