Just popping up to remind you there’s precisely 20 more days left until our season of staged spectacles and we cordially invite you into this captivating new synergy of actors, writers and spectators, shelving archaic stereotypes and parting directions with constraining conventions. Having considered theatre as the ‘Theatre Of Revolution’, Utpal Dutt mechanized it into a revealing window of state intentions alongside politically educating the masses – no political rally of the Marxists was concluded without Dutt’s 30 minute productions. Heavily impacted by Brecht and Bernard Shaw and being an abashed believer of Stalin, Dutt’s political affinities resurfaced through the famous adaptation of Julius Caesar (1949) by his group, Amateur Shakespeareans –dressed in the context of the world war II and the demonic rise of fascism under Hi**er and Mussolini, Dutt’s covert linking of the Roman dictator with the modern counterparts reflected the director’s concern with the menace of warmongering , also evident in Brecht’s The Resistible Rise Of Arturo Ui (1958). Consequently, radical political adaptations of Odets’s ‘Waiting For Lefty’, Shaw’s ‘Mrs. Warren’s Profession’, Ibsen’s ‘A doll house” were emblematic of how theatrical adaptations were more than just lowbrow entertainment.
