I saw a lynching video. Five or six men were beating an almost dead man. But something that was extremely peculiar about this video were the bystanders. They came, stood casually or walked past the spot with zero unease. The indifference of the 'others' of the society is dangerous. I sometimes think - there isn't much of a difference between the bystanders in the lynching video and us (the educated elites). I sometimes think, "Why are we silent?".

A lot needs to be done. If you want to contribute to the effort (both monetarily or by being a part of the initiative) please contact us. The team is making efforts of reaching out to the victim families and providing them with legal assistance.

Also, as a part of the initiative we shall be releasing a Documentary Short Film in April 2019. Stay tuned for more clippings from the short film.

An appeal for Karwan-E- Mohabbat - Harsh Mander

An Appeal for Karawan-e-Mohabbat

26/09/2018

In response to the increasing religious intolerance and communal violence across the country, a former bureaucrat, Harsh Mander, started out with the Karwan-E- Mohabbat, a caravan of love, to fight communal violence and hatred in the country. The Karwan started out with Harsh Sir visiting these places and offering flowers at the exact place where the lynchings had happened. This project was largely about reaching out to the victim families in solidarity and helping them to seek justice. One such example is the Aman Insaniyat Citizen Council established in different districts to discuss and respond to communal hatred.

A very moving paragraph from the book, "Reconciliation" on the Karwaan -

"We encountered widows, mothers, fathers and children, numbed with incomprehension at the loathing and violence that had snatched from them their loved ones. I wondered, 'How could the parents of two teenaged boys in Nagoan, Assam, come to terms with the lynching of their sons by a mob from the neighboring village, gouging out their eyes, severing their ears while accusing them of being cow thieves? Why would anyone murder and mutilate a person they did not even know? Why would complete strangers stab Harish Pujari fourteen times near Mangalore, pulling out his intestines, only because they mistook him for a Muslim when he was riding pillion behind his Muslim friend?"

We are extremely privileged that NUJS has gotten a chance to work with Karwan-E- Mohabbat. A set of students visited Uttar Dinajpur, in North Bengal where cow lynchings have happened and are working to provide legal recourse to the victim families. In furtherance NUJS Karwan-E-Mohabbat would is looking at the legal ways in which the victims can be helped.
