This project is aimed at recovering the history of physical cultures of Bengal, during the colonial as well as the pre-colonial period.

It is well-known that various genres of physical cultures received an unprecedented impetus during the nationalist phase in Indian history, dating from roughly the end of the 19th century till the third decade of the 20th. During this time, a kind of muscular nationalism gained ground in Bengal. Fed up of being stigmatized as a ‘frail and effeminate’ race, Bengalis—both men and women—began to part

In 1894 W.K.L. Dickinson with the assistance of William Heise made a film of Eugen Sandow, who posed in the Black Maria studio. The producer of the kinetoscopes, one Thomas Alva Edison, met Sandow, seen as the perfection of the male form, after the shoot. Sandow was paid $250 for the video, archived at the Library of Congress.

Frederick Harrington Brett, at the time Assistant Surgeon to the Governor General's Bodyguard, advises colonizers in India in 1840 on the medical benefits of kushti:

If Europeans cannot adopt their mode of life to a tropical climate but must indulge in habits totally incompatible with such a climate, they should at all events endeavour to convert their food into wholesome nutriment, and preserve the robustness of their frames by practicing athletic exercises, in the cool of the day, and wrestling in imitation of the Puhlwans. It is indisputable that these individuals enjoy an immunity from disease, unknown by others. [42]

Pulin Behari Das (1877-1949), whose life and work have been a focal point of our project, was a revolutionary leader during India's independence struggle and founder of the Dhaka Anushilan Samity.

A few months back members of his family very generously handed over a film reel to the School of Cultural Texts and Records containing footage of a stick-fight display.

No digitization technology was easily available, so we decided to painstakingly scan the film, separate each frame and compile them into a short video. We are on the look-out for a more efficient way of doing it right now, and hopefully we'll have it up in no time.

What we found upon scanning and compiling each individual frame appears to be a rare clip of the master himself. We will need further confirmation, but a look at the existing images of Pulin Behari Das in his later years reveals the similarity.

Are we on the brink of discovering something truly special and never-seen-before?

This clip was prepared by Sujaan Mukherjee and Sarbajit Mitra at the School of Cultural Texts and Records, Jadavpur University.

"Captain Godfrey Rodrigues, who has been demonstrating his method of posture in many cities of the United States, draws our attention to a very simple yet easy method of developing good postural habit. This consists specifically in consciously drawing in the upper abdomen at all times, whether standing, walking or sitting. By "the upper abdomen" is meant that portion immediately below the ribs and the sternum, or breastbone.
In studying the statues of the athletes of ancient Greece, Captain Rodrigues found that these statues exemplified his theory of posture. By practising this method, it can be readily seen that the chest is forward, the shoulders squared, and the proper curvation of the spine attained. Thus, the chest and the abdomen are given more space in which to carry their functions."
