Driving Safety / Defensive Driving Guidence
1. Importance of Driving Safety
- Ensures the safety of drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and workplace staff.
- Prevents property damage, vehicle downtime, and costly accidents.
- Builds a responsible and professional driving culture.
- Helps maintain compliance with organizational and legal standards.
2. Pre-Trip and Post-Trip Inspections
- Inspect brakes, lights, reflectors, mirrors, windshields, and wipers.
- Check tire pressure and tread depth to prevent blowouts.
- Test horn, signals, and emergency equipment before leaving.
- Report any mechanical defects immediately and do not operate unsafe vehicles.
3. Seat Belt and PPE Use
- Always fasten your seatbelt before moving the vehicle.
- Use helmets, reflective jackets, and gloves when working outside or near traffic zones.
- Seatbelts and PPE minimize injury risks during accidents.
4. Speed Management
- Follow posted speed limits; never exceed them.
- Adjust speed according to load weight, traffic, visibility, and road conditions.
- Reduce speed when turning, reversing, or driving through work zones.
5. Safe Following Distance
- Maintain a minimum distance of at least 3 seconds behind the vehicle ahead.
- Increase the gap during rain, fog, or low visibility.
- Avoid tailgating to prevent rear-end collisions.
6. Distracted Driving Control
- Avoid using mobile phones, eating, or adjusting controls while driving.
- Focus on the road, mirrors, and surrounding hazards.
- Use hands-free systems only if approved and safe to operate.
7. Signaling and Awareness
- Signal early before turns, lane changes, or slowing down.
- Use mirrors regularly to check blind spots.
- Stay alert for pedestrians, workers, and other vehicles in industrial areas.
8. Defensive Driving Practices
- Expect mistakes from other drivers and be prepared to react safely.
- Keep your vehicle visible; avoid another driver’s blind spots.
- Always anticipate road hazards and plan escape routes.
- Do not assume others will stop or signal correctly.
9. Fatigue and Health Management
- Take regular breaks during long shifts.
- Avoid driving when tired, ill, or under medication causing drowsiness.
- Stay hydrated and maintain proper posture while driving.
10. Driving Under Influence (DUI) Prevention
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or any impairing substances.
- Report any driver showing signs of intoxication.
- Encourage strict enforcement of company’s DUI policy.

Extinguishing Ignitable Liquid Fires
When liquid fuels ignite, they burn on the surface of the liquid — not within it. These are known as ignitable liquid fires (or Class B fires) and include fuels like gasoline, diesel, alcohol, and oil that can vaporize and catch fire quickly.
To control these dangerous fires, firefighters use foam-based extinguishing agents designed to smother and seal the fuel surface, cutting off oxygen and preventing reignition.
💧 Foam Application Techniques:
1. Bankdown Method – Foam is directed at a nearby surface (like a car body or wall), letting it flow down gently and cover the burning fuel.
2. Roll-On Method – Foam is applied to the ground in front of the fire, allowing it to roll smoothly across the surface.
3. Rain-Down Method – Foam is projected upward so it falls gently over a large spill fire without disturbing the liquid.
⸻
🧭 Operational Safety
✅ Always confirm the attack plan with the Incident Commander (IC).
✅ Attack from upwind and uphill whenever possible.
✅ Verify the correct foam type and concentration (AFFF, AR-AFFF, etc.).
✅ Maintain situational awareness — wind and fuel behavior can change fast.
⸻
🔥 Why Foam Works
Foam doesn’t just “put out” the flames — it interrupts the fire triangle:
• Cools the fuel surface
• Smothers vapors
• Prevents air contact
• Forms a vapor-sealing blanket to stop reignition
⸻
⚠️ For the Public
Never try to fight a fuel or oil fire with water — it can cause the burning liquid to spread even faster.
If it’s safe to do so:
✅ Turn off the fuel source.
✅ Evacuate immediately.
✅ Call 911 or your nearest fire station for help.

Knowledge saves lives.
Understanding how ignitable liquid fires behave — and how firefighters fight them — helps everyone stay safer when seconds count. 💪🔥
