12 Keys School of Music is primarily for those students who want to take up music as a profession. It is for those who want to make musical excellence a prime aspiration in their lives. A musician who can play any piece of music in 12 keys ( in all major scales) can be said to have achieved a high level of fluency and proficiency in playing. This is an exercise that contrib
utes to foundational strength in music and technically enables a musician to take on further explorations with fortified confidence. This is the spirit that permeates the music education provided at 12 Keys, School of Music- encouraging an immersive, comprehensive development of professional musicianship that enables one to be achieve world-class standards of musicianship. At 12 Keys School of Music, we firmly believe that following our methodology, everyone can become a world-class musician. Our system is centred around a close mentoring relationship and individualized learning strategies for each student, supported by intensive personal practice. Students spend an average of 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, practicing at school to create depth and proficiency of learning. Lessons are simple with even complex concepts broken into simple parts so that any student can understand and learn them to perfection. The environment at school is disciplined and eliminates any distraction so that the student can focus on just practicing. Students' level of skill, area of interest and pace of learning is assessed by the mentor and each student is put on a customised learning strategy pertaining to the specific modules (Language of Music Module, Jazz Module 1, Blues Module 1 etc), which is closely supervised by the mentor. The set goals as per the learning plan, are to be achieved with complete fluency. There is no exam to test this. Exams destroy the aim and process of learning. Experiences from the lives of great masters of Western Music has shown us that such systems of examinations and marks are meaningless as they serve no indication of what musical greatness can be achieved through sheer hard work in the proper process. With exams the focus is on how to pass the exam well rather than learn the subject with depth. There is no specific dead line either though a general idea of how long a student should take to achieve goals set in his/her learning plan is discussed with the mentor. Focus will be given to ensure the student doesn't slack in any way. This practice is due to our belief that deadlines interfere with quality of work and study. However, it has been observed that a student should not require more than 1.5 years for each module.
12 Keys offers no degree or diploma in music. These are never needed for any musician to get gigs, connect with other musicians or get students even. Musicians solely get work on the basis of their ability and quality and our focus is also on just that. We will provide each student a certificate mentioning the modules that have been covered successfully under the mentor and the duration of study with the school.
12 Keys is interested in seeing that all its students reach their highest potential. Students are given admission here not because of their talent but because of their attitude and the fact that they want to simply work very hard and correctly and want to take their musicianship to the highest level possible. All of the greatest musicians have got to where they were by putting in many many hours of work the right way. 12 Keys creates the environment for one to do that. And yes, everyone should believe that they can become world class. And in good time it will happen. 12 Keys ensures a non judgmental, non discriminatory environment. One will not feel fear or feel less here. All students are taught to respect and help each other.
