THALASSEMIA AWARENESS PROGRAMME

- Organized by INTERACT Club of SILVER POINT SCHOOL in collaboration with ROTARY CLUB OF 8CALCUTTA INNER CITY

Rtn Amita Saha, Vice President

World Thalassemia Day is observed every year on 8th May, to spread awareness about prevention , early diagnosis and treatment.

Silver Point School Interact Club, in collaboration with Rotary Club of Calcutta Inner City, organised Thalassemia Awareness Programme primarily-

To combat this serious inherited blood disorder through education, prevention and support, aligning with the focus on disease prevention and treatment.

To understand that a simple blood test can identify the carriers allowing them to make informed decisions and prevent the birth of their offspring with Thalassemia Major.

Discussion:
Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder caused by genetic mutations that prevent the body from producing enough functional haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. This deficiency leads to reduced red blood cell production and increased destruction, causing anaemia, fatigue, and potential organ damage.

According to the child health care professionals , a child might have Thalassemia, blood tests can confirm it. Blood tests can reveal the number of red blood cells and irregular changes in their size, shape or colour. Blood tests also can be used to look for gene changes in DNA.

Yes, a Complete Blood Count (CBC) can detect signs of thalassemia, but it cannot confirm the diagnosis on its own. A CBC often reveals low haemoglobin (anaemia) and small red blood cells (low MCV/MCH), which are common indicators. Further tests, such as haemoglobin electrophoresis or genetic testing, are required to confirm the condition. .

Silver Point School, with the support of Rotary Club of Calcutta Inner City, will organized a free blood test camp in the near future for students of the institution to offer free screenings to identify carriers, and to reduce the cases thalassemia major in future generations.

The programme was organized to bridge the knowledge gap , promoting…

AWARENESS TODAY, HEALTHY TOMORROW .
