Raving review by Bangla Statesman on Rabinandan's annual program.

13/03/2016

The Statesman reviewed Rabinandan's annual program on Tagore's "Bhanga Gaan" today. Here is the review:

Tagorean eve
Rabinandan organised an event based on “Bhanga Gaan” at Ashutosh Memorial Hall (20 February). After the inaugural lectures, the first part of the evening featured Chhanda Sen, former student of Geetabitan and teacher. Her solo renderings emanated traditional flavour. This was followed by the Rabinandan Choir group’s presentation, which began with a mantra from the Upanishad, tuned by Tagore, and moved on to Rabindrasangeet, which draws its sap from dhrupad, dhamar, khayal, thumri, tarana, bhajan, folk and even Western numbers, presented as solo, duet or in a group by Sanghamitra Chatterjee, Shabari Nag Das, Shabani Sen, Soumi Bhattacharya under the seasoned direction of Suparna Basu and Tapasi Nandan. They were accompanied by Shikharesh Basu (tabla), Arabinda Sen (esraj), Rupak Das (keyboard), Rupak Mukherjee (mandira). Debjani Majumdar, the director of Rabinandan, strung the event expertly.

Join us for Rabinandan's annual program on Feb 20, 2016 at Ashutosh Mancha, Kolkata at 6PM. The first part of the program will feature a solo performance by Gitabitan's Professor Chhanda Sengupta. The second half will feature a segment on Tagore's "bhanga gaan" - or songs composed by Tagore that were influenced by factors external to his genre of music.
Tagore's interest in "bhanga gaan" probably takes root in his early childhood at Jorasanko. In those days, Jorasanko regularly hosted the top musical talent in Bengal like Ramapati Banerjee, Jadubhatt and Ramchandra. Tagore's brothers regularly composed music based on their styles for the purpose of Maghotsab - a festival marking the anniversary of the Brahmo Samaj.
Inspired by this innovation, Tagore adopted this approach in his later works taking inspiration from Indian classical music, bhajans, eastern and western composers, folk music etc. Tagore was a rigorous student of music of all genres - and composed approximately 228 songs based on other genres.
Rabinandan's exhibition of "Bhanga Gaan" is a small effort in showcasing this unique side of Tagore's Music.
