He eloquently described yoga as a powerful force of integrationโuniting mind and body, harmonizing thought and action, and strengthening the intrinsic bond between humanity and nature. Emphasizing yoga as a gateway to meditation, he explained how regular practice nurtures inner peace, self-awareness, and spiritual growth.
Sharing insights from his own experience, Dr. Patra noted that yoga enhances concentration, sharpens focus, and promotes a balanced and healthy lifestyle. His motivating words resonated strongly with the students and participants gathered for the occasion.
The celebration was graced by distinguished dignitaries, including Prof. A. Chattopadhyay, Dean, Faculty of Horticulture, and Prof. S. Karmakar, Dean, Faculty of Agricultural Engineering. Prof. Manabendra Roy, Dean of Extension Education, spoke passionately about yogaโs transformative potential, emphasizing its role in building resilience, fostering mental well-being, and enriching everyday life.
Adding a historical and cultural dimension to the event, Prof. A. B. Sharangi (HOD, PSMA) traced the evolution of yoga from ancient civilization and archaeological depictions in Mohenjo-daro to the codification of yogic philosophy by Maharshi Patanjali. He also reflected on the tradition of Adiyogi imparting yogic knowledge during the summer solstice and highlighted the landmark 2014 initiative led by Indiaโs Honโble Prime Minister and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly, which established International Yoga Day as a global celebration.
The formal addresses were followed by an engaging practical session conducted by a certified yoga instructor. Participants enthusiastically performed various yogic practices and asanas, transforming both indoor and outdoor spaces across the campus into vibrant centres of mindfulness, discipline, and collective well-being.
Skillfully anchored by Prof. A. Biswas, the programme concluded on a note of joy, unity, and renewed commitment to healthy living. Conducted across the Mohanpur Main Campus as well as BCKVโs constituent collegesโCollege of Agriculture, Barddhaman (CoA-Barddhaman) and College of Agriculture, Bankura (CoA-Bankura)โthe celebration reaffirmed the universityโs dedication to nurturing the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of its academic community.

Heartiest congratulations to our distinguished alumnus and esteemed faculty member, Prof. Kalyan Chakraborti, on his appointment as the Cabinet Minister for Information Technology & Electronics, Science & Technology and Biotechnology, and Food Processing Industries & Horticulture in the Government of West Bengal. The entire Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV) fraternity takes immense pride in this historic milestone, celebrating a visionary leader whose career path embodies the highest standards of dedication, research excellence, and public duty.
As a Professor in the AICRP (Fruits), Faculty of Horticulture at BCKV, Prof. Chakraborti has spent decades pioneering advancements in the sustainable cultivation of fruit crops and rural empowerment. He has masterfully bridged the gap between laboratory breakthrough and field-level application, introducing high-impact production technologies that directly uplift smallholders and farming communities. Beyond his extensive research, his academic stewardship, student mentorship, and farmer-oriented extension work have significantly contributed to transforming the region's agricultural landscape.
This deep-rooted commitment to social welfare is equally reflected in his noble endeavor as the founder of Desher Mati Kalyan Mandir. His extraordinary evolution from a dedicated academician to the highest tiers of state governance stands as a powerful beacon of inspiration for scientists, educators, and the youth alike. We wish him a glorious, visionary, and transformative tenure ahead as he shapes the intersection of West Bengal's technological and agricultural future!

The simple act of pedaling a bicycle holds extraordinary power for our personal well-being and the collective future of our planet. Celebrating World Bicycle Day at the Mohanpur campuses of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV) and West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences (WBUAFS)โin a vibrant collaboration between Fit India and Agrivision West Bengalโreminded us that the humble bicycle is a vital tool for sustainable development. Graced by Honโble Vice-Chancellor Dr. Ashok Kumar Patra and Dr. Raghunath Mandal, the energy of over 300 enthusiastic students echoed a timely message: it is time to embrace active movement as a conscious lifestyle choice.
Cycling is a profound prescription for public health. As a form of low-impact, muscle-strengthening cardiovascular exercise, regular cycling actively counters the modern epidemic of sedentary lifestyles, improving heart health, mental clarity, and overall physical stamina. Beyond individual wellness, human-powered movement acts as a catalyst for environmental restoration. Every pedal stroke represents zero emissions, offering a direct antidote to urban air pollution, smog, and carbon footprints. When we choose two wheels over fossil-fueled vehicles, we actively reduce traffic congestion, minimize resource consumption, and foster quieter, more livable ecosystems.
The incredible youth leadership witnessed during our campus rally proves that building a fitter, greener India begins with community action. By integrating cycling into our daily routines, we don't just transform our physical health; we take a definitive stand for global climate resilience. Let us keep this momentum rolling forward.

On June 5, 2026, the Convocation Hall at BCKV became a powerful arena of environmental advocacy as the university commemorated World Environment Day 2026. Bringing together a distinguished assembly of Union and State Ministers, legislators, eminent scientists, and agrarian stakeholders, the event commenced with a symbolic green ritual: a campus tree plantation and the traditional watering of a Tulsi plant. Welcoming over 500 enthusiastic staff and students, Dr. Ashok K. Patra, Vice-Chancellor of BCKV, anchored the day in global urgency by issuing a passionate call for a plastic-free world. Dr. Patra reminded the audience that, โWe donโt inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. It is our absolute moral responsibility to hand it over to the next generation in a healthier, cleaner, greener, and more sustainable state.โ
This momentum sustained as policymakers seamlessly connected global environmental targets with grassroots action. Shri Shantanu Thakur, Union Minister of State, reminded the audience that a clean environment is the fundamental bedrock of a healthy society, while Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Union Minister of State, delivered a stirring warning to humanity: โNature does not complain; nature reacts.โ Pointing to the rising frequency of devastating regional cyclones, Dr. Majumdar drew inspiration from indigenous wisdom, citing the ancient sacred groves of Meghalaya, and championed the emotional movement of planting trees in the name of one's mother to forge a personal bond with conservation. Adding to this vision, Dr. Kalyan Chakraborti, Minister-in-Charge, Government of West Bengal, advocated for a pesticide-free India through organic farming, noting that planting a tree is merely the first step, while ensuring its survival through sustained care is the true ecological victory. Further bolstering this charge, Shri Ashim Kumar Sarkar, MLA, paid tribute to the legacy of Dr. B.C.Roy and honored the resilience of the farming community through a moving poem, while Shri Bankim Chandra Ghosh, MLA, and Shri Anupam Biswas, MLA, urged the younger generation to fiercely protect ecological equilibrium for posterity.
The event highlighted significant scientific advancements, including the launch of a university publication and the introduction of 100% pure organic turmeric powder by BCKVโs research teams. Dr. D. K. Khan delivered a lecture on the links between local hazards and global climate efforts, outlining strategies for ecosystem restoration and global warming mitigation. The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Manabendra Ray and was hosted by Prof. A. B. Sharangi and Dr. Debalina Majhi. It exemplified BCKVโs commitment to integrating agricultural science with community responsibility for a sustainable and climate-resilient future.
