There are greater things to be achieved every new year, and everyone must prepare themselves to be great, not through sacrifices, but through words.
Words are potent weapons for all causes. Good or bad, words mean more than what is set down on paper and most importantly, it takes the human voice to infuse them with deeper meaning.
This March, steer your thoughts and prepare to be heard as your expression drives the masses.
You can’t see it, but it’s almost here. Stay Tuned.

'Don't raise your voice, improve your argument'
It is this very idea that has laid down the foundation of the Xaverian Debating Society. While the batch of 2018-19 left no stone unturned to make the society reach its zenith, we believe that the society can keep improving and reaching newer heights through a culmination of fresh ideas and able leadership.
It gives us great pleasure to announce our office bearers for the session 2019-2020. Here’s to another glorious chapter!

With the aim of galvanising the art of parliamentary debating in Kolkata, the Xaverian Debating Society organised an off-campus parliamentary debating tournament on June 8. A mini-tournament, geared to consolidate the debating circuit in Kolkata, it hosted debaters from budding debating societies and premier colleges alike.
The daylong tournament involved participation from different institutions across the city, consisting of three preliminary rounds and knockouts. In the end, Presidency University took the laurels with an impressive display against St. Xavier's College in the final.
This tournament was designed with the objective of introducing novice debaters to the basics of parliamentary debating- through individual feedback, level competition, and assisstance in team formation- and marks a small but significant step in providing platforms where debaters can engage and compete through the XDS.
On behalf of the Secretary Oishik Banerjee and the Assistant Secretary Ved Mehta, we would like to thank Debayan Mitra, Ribhu Mukherjee, and Soham Chakraborty for their organisational assistance, and look forward to hosting more such tournaments in the time to come.

This week, the Xaverian Debating Society and Breakspace present another installment of the Weekly Word Wars.
Over the the last decade, lower middle-class and middle-class families have come to believe that private schools will ensure their children a bright career. The subsequent mushrooming of English medium private schools have led to the decline of public schools. Many public schools that were once teeming with children are facing closure over the lack of quality teaching, proper utilization of resources etc. The government regularly fails to meet its 6% of GDP investment in education benchmark.
Given the dire situation that faces these institutions,
This House will privatize Government Education Institutions.

The Xaverian Debating Society presents Weekly Word Wars, a platform where like-minded (or not) people come together to express their thoughts on an assortment of topics.
House elves in the Harry Potter universe are small, servile yet magically powerful creatures owned by influential wizarding households to serve the family loyally. They are content with their status and have been conditioned to believe their servitude and unquestioned loyalty to their masters is the purpose of their existence in tune with the natural order of the wizarding world. The only way to ‘free’ an elf, something they are shown to often not desire, is by having the immediate master give them clothes.
Parallels can be drawn to the Indian caste system wherein social conditioning spread over hundreds of years has led to the stratification of society into rigid occupational blocks, with the lowest meant for servitude at the hands of the powerful. The difference, however, is that while house elves are portrayed as complacent, and even celebratory, of their ‘destined’ slave status, lower castes have been the focal point of much social upheaval in their intent to change the order structurally.
Winky, the house elf of the Crouch family in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was fired by her master, Bartemius Crouch Sr. as a sacrificial lamb. Later, she showed signs of depression and guilt for having broken a generational tradition that was intrinsic to her sense of identity, and took to a debilitating habit of heavy drinking and self-pity.
The Xaverian Debating Society puts you in the shoes of Hermione Granger in her fourth year as she developes a fierce sense of social justice.
This house, as Hermione Granger, will free Winky the house elf.

The Xaverian Debating Society presents Weekly Word Wars, a platform where like-minded (or not) people come together to express their thoughts on an assortment of topics.
For the first installment, we journey to Westeros. In Game of Thrones, the Night King is generally perceived as the ultimate villain and the biggest threat to mankind. However, as more information is revealed about his past and how the Night King came into being, his typecasting as a villain appears problematic, arguably even unfair.
With respect to the Night King's complex history and his motivations to annihilate humans, in the opinion of the house do you think the Night King is the wronged hero of Westeros?
Let us know if you agree by tapping the like button. And if you don't, feel free to leave a no in the comments.
