Ever heard of Chempakaraman Pillai—the Indian revolutionary who fought for India’s freedom from Europe? 🇮🇳
While many freedom fighters organised resistance within India, Pillai took the struggle abroad. Born in Thiruvananthapuram in 1891, he moved overseas as a teenager and, during World War I, built connections in Germany and worked towards an armed struggle against British rule. He formed the International Pro-India Committee in 1914 and later established the Indian Independence Committee in Berlin.
He is also associated with the SMS Emden, the German cruiser that attacked British installations in Madras (now Chennai) in September 1914. The exact extent of Pillai’s role in the operation is debated, so his story is best understood as part of the wider network of Indian revolutionaries working internationally during World War I.
What makes his story remarkable is that India’s freedom struggle was never confined to India. It crossed borders, connected revolutionaries across continents and used international politics as a weapon against the British Empire.
