🏮 OBON: When Ancestral Spirits Come Back Home

Obon is one of Japan’s most important traditions for remembering and honoring ancestors, based on the belief that ancestral spirits return to the world of the living during this period. Families visit graves, offer food and prayers, and welcome the spirits with vegetable animals—shōryō-uma (a cucumber horse for a swift journey returning home) and shōryō-ushi (an eggplant cow for a slower journey back to the spirit world while carrying their belongings). Floating lanterns (tōrō nagashi) are used in some regions at the end of Obon to symbolically guide the departing spirits back to the spirit world. Bon Odori, the traditional Obon dance, grew from Buddhist traditions associated with honoring the dead and became a joyful communal celebration in which people gather, dance and remember their ancestors together.
Obon is observed on different dates across Japan—mid-July (Shichigatsu Bon), August 13–16 (Hachigatsu Bon), or on the 15th day of the seventh month of the old lunar calendar (Kyū Bon, which varies each year)—depending on local customs.

Benzaiten is the Japanese Buddhist adaptation of the Hindu goddess Saraswati,
Both goddesses are deities of wisdom, music, arts, and flowing water, with Benzaiten (or Benten) often holding a biwa (Japanese lute) instead of Saraswati's veena. Both are closely linked to water, representing purity and flow, and are revered as patrons of music, eloquence, and the arts.
In Japan, Benzaiten evolved from a, Hindu deity into one of the Seven Lucky Gods (Fukurokuju), adding aspects of fortune and wealth (due to the Kanji for "talent" being replaced by "wealth" in her name).
While Saraswati is associated with the swan, Benzaiten is often associated with white snakes or dragons, symbolizing her connection to water.
