Premchand Jayanti Celebration organized by Hindi-Department of Syamaprasad College, Kolkata. On this occasion, various aspects of Prachanda’s writing were discussed. The program began with a welcome song jointly presented by Shraddha Gupta and Rupa Rai. At the beginning of the program, Dr. Srinivas Singh Yadav, Vice-Principal of the college and Head of the Hindi Department, delivered the welcome speech. In his welcome speech, he mentioned stories written by Premchand - Sadgati, Panch Parmeshwar, Kafan, etc.—noting that Premchand highlighted various societal issues through his literature." He opposed discrimination, hypocrisy, superstition, and other social evils prevalent in Indian society through his fictional works.
Dr. Vijay Kumar Bharti, Professor at Kazi Nazrul University and former Vice-Chancellor of Hindi University (Howrah), was present as the keynote speaker at the program. He gave a very sumptuous and inspiring statement on the topic "Challenges of present time and literature of Premchand".
"Dr. Bharti said that Premchand's stories remain relevant today because they reveal enduring social truths. 'The problems that Premchand wrote about in 1936 can still be seen in our society in 2025,' he noted, adding that issues such as racial injustice, economic inequality, gender conflict, and linguistic diversity are portrayed in Premchand’s literature with the same vitality."
He emphasized linguistic unity, stating that Hindi and Bangla complement each other in a multilingual country like India. 'If we remove Hindi from Bangla, or separate Bangla from Hindi, both languages will remain incomplete.' He added that, from Premchand's perspective, it is clear that language is not just a medium of communication, but also a foundation of social unity.
Dr. Indrani Mukhopadhyay, Professor of the Bangla Department at the college, stated that Premchand is not only a shared cultural heritage of Hindi literature but also of Indian literature. Bangla-speaking students also read Premchand with equal respect and appreciation.
Ayush Singh, a fourth-semester student, presented an impressive research article titled 'Premchand: In Today's Perspective,' which received great appreciation from the audience. A large number of students and teachers participated in the program.
Dr. Vinita Tiwari of the Hindi Department conducted the program with utmost efficiency, while Mr. Sumit Yadav, Lecturer of the Hindi Department, managed the overall arrangements. The program concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Srinivas Singh Yadav.
