In lieu of Autism Awareness month, Big Leap in association with Rotary Club of Calcutta Metro City, organized a programme “Autism and Awareness”, on 24th April,2024. This was done to promote advocacy of inclusion. The evening was made memorable by the students, who themselves were able to articulate and demonstrate their achievements. It was a special moment for us as well as their parents who strive so hard to provide them with the much needed intervention. There were hand-made cards by the students on display, and they participated in a ramp-walk, along with their parents,to celebrate their individual selves by donning colourful garments. We believe the event to be a success simply because we had so many questions coming in from people regarding how they might immerse in advocacy of inclusion and how they might be able to do their bit to help those with Autism to flourish. We are grateful for the kind of participation and applaud we received. Parents too took their time in sharing their journeys that opened up the floor to a more in-depth discussion.
Special mentions go out to quite a few people. Well-known paediatrician, Dr. Joydeb Roy, spoke about how autism isn’t a disease and that parents shouldn’t immediately run to a doctor to find a “cure” for it. He took care in explaining the importance of timely and proper intervention.
We also had the pleasure of hosting of eminent singer, song writer and film maker, Anindya Chatterjee who has always shown eagerness in participating in advocacy of inclusion. He has kindly extended his faculties in making our broader goal a success. He performed a recitation and made the evening even warmer.
The whole design and set-up of the programme was led by Shalini Sen , who did a brilliant job in making it feel homely and festive.
The children’s wonderful clothing was sponsored by Bhomra and Company, a delightful home-grown brand.
All the black and white photographs have been curated by Sushmita Saha and the videography that was displayed on the screen capturing the children’s activities, was done by Rupa Sarkar. They also did a wonderful job in capturing the essence of the evening.

We couldn’t have done any of it without our parents, our advocates, our social partners and most of all, our students for whom we strive to provide the best.

We promise this will be an evening that you will hold dear to you!
Do join us in our continual attempt to raise awareness and inclusion, and to create dialogue about autism.

Let us colour ourselves in blue today! The 2nd of April is observed as World Autism Awareness Day. Autism over the years has come to shed its skin as an 'illness' and more of a speciality. Children or adults with autism are no different than you and I.

Big Leap encourages an all-inclusive system of learning and living. The need to embrace awareness towards autism is the need of the hour, even if there aren’t trending stories or reels about it.

Infact, they are much more perceptive and sensitive, only in a different form. The area of knowledge and learning is vast. It is a continual and conscious process to include those with autism into a society that has been rather exclusive. However, times are changing and mental health is considered to be one of the pillars of well being, along with nurturing of those who are differently abled. Let's come together to try and create a space for all, where interaction isn't limited and neither is the exchange of knowledge and companionship. The most important of all, is acceptance. Acceptance of individuals who are under this spectrum. It is important that we take time to learn more about this neuro developmental disorder. It is also important that we take an initiative for inclusion.

We must not be hesitant in starting conversations about children as well as adults who are differently abled, because they make up this world as much as we do, and maybe even more. Their skills and talents are not for self-promotion but for the betterment of themselves and those around them.

Being in the know that autism isn’t an incapability but rather a development disability, which through proper intervention can be addressed, is important.
Once again, Happy World Autism Awareness Day to those who know it, celebrate it, struggle with it and ultimately embrace it!

It’s been years since the conversation about autism has started- be it due to films being made about it or even well-known public figures talking about it. However, that only is a matter of time till it disappears into oblivion. What we really should be talking about is the basics- What is Autism? How do we, as apparent responsible members of the society educate ourselves with the correct information? How do we spread awareness?

The answer is simple- talk about it. Ask about it.

Let us colour ourselves in blue today! The 2nd of April is observed as World Autism Awareness Day. Autism over the years has come to shed its skin as an 'illness' and more of a speciality. Children or adults with autism are no different than you and I. Infact, they are much more perceptive and sensitive, only in a different form. The area of knowledge and learning is vast. It is also important that we take an initiative for inclusion. And that what we, at Big Leap do! Striving towards and bettering the inclusive learning environment and making the most out of it for our students and parents.

Big Leap Kolkata celebrated World Earth Day with its students and teachers ensuring a wholesome experience. During a time that is so void and forgetful of being grateful toward Earth and its elements, its important to inbibe in the children the need to keep in mind its contributions. A greener environment ensures longevity of life and a healthier way of living. Big Leap in its own, small way paid tribute to it. The children turned the four elements of the Earth into colour craft work and the teachers helped to decorate and display it. Little gestures such as this helps them in incorporating the need to be aware and help in growth of themselves. A colourful display surrounded by nature's own children makes for a soothing sight too! All was done keeping ib mind the regulations gor Covid-19. Proper usage of masks, disinfectants and sanitizers were ensured and encouraged.

Big Leap” was borne out of that altruism of giving our knowledge and expertise back to the society, especially to children who need it the most. The dream of a conducively created easy space where all can” Learn together” seems to be coming true.
This is the link to our official website :

http://bigleapkolkata.org/

The fundamental principle of Big Leap will be that all children will be LEARNING TOGETHER regardless of any difficulties, differences they may have. The goal of inclusion is to help all children learn to the best of their abilities.
This initiative also houses Montessori teaching for neuro typical children, this being one of the major catalysts behind this concept. The idea of combining a space to make it available to both neuro-typical and special needs children is one of a kind.
Special needs skills will be taught by using the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis under the supervision of certified professional.

Arts Based Therapy (ABT) is the evidence based use of art forms to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship. It is based on Subtle Energy Guide which includes Indian PSychology and Ethics,Studies of Human Development and Cognitive Neurosciences using elements of and methods from three artistic medis-music,drama and visual arts.
An inclusive education means different and diverse students learning side by side in the same classroom. In a truly inclusive setting, every child should feel safe, have a sense of belonging, would be valued equally, treated with respect and be provided with real learning opportunities.Inclusive education implies special educational needs -that is Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Oral Placement therapy and behavioural support. We also would provide Education Health Care- a plan of care for children and young adults who have more complex needs.
Big Leap caters to all of these needs for we believe an assimilation of therapies of all sorts can be a fun-filled reinforced productive learning experience for children of all domains.
The whole process will involve 4 stages i.e. assess, plan, do and review.
