Let the present ages of A and B be 'a' and 'b' and the difference of their ages be x.
So, a - b = x, => a = b + x .... (1)
From 1st statement: .
When A's age was b (i.e. x years ago), B's age was ( b-x).
Given, a = 2.(b-x) => (b+x) = 2 (b-x) => (b+x) = 2b - 2x.
=> b = 3x ... (2)
From 2nd statement:
When B's age will be 'a' (i.e. b+x), then A's age will be (b+8).
Now, A's age - B's age = x, So, (b+8) - (b+x) = x ,
=> 8 - x = x , => x = 4.
Putting x=4 in (2), b=3x = 12. So, a = b+x = 12+4 =16.
So, present ages of A and B are , 16 and 12.
So, sum of their ages = 16+12 = 28 (ans).
