What is Peter Principle?
The Peter principle states that a person who is competent at his job will earn a promotion to a position that requires different skills. If the promoted person lacks the skills required for the new role, they will be incompetent at the new level, and will not be promoted again. In other words, if an employee performs well in his job, he will likely be promoted to the next level of the organization's hierarchy. He will continue to rise up the ladder until he reaches the point where he can no longer perform well.
What does that mean?
According to Dr. Laurence J. Peter, a Canadian Scholar and Sociologist, since there are limitations to an employee’s skills and competence in a work place, every position in a given hierarchy will eventually be filled by employees who are incompetent to fulfil the job duties of their respective positions. He states, that "the cream rises until it sours." In other words, excellent employee performance is inevitably promoted to the point where the employee's performance is no longer excellent, or even satisfactory.
Is the Principle relevant today?
Since the competency- incompetency matrix is an important determinant in job promotions, the core of the Peter Principle is still relevant. But the present workplace environment has changed enormously. Therefore, the principle may not be wholly applicable or the incompetency syndrome can be largely avoided.
How can an organisation avoid the syndrome?
1) Assessing job skills and potential of employees at the entry-level.
2) Investing in quality training programmes for regular up-gradation.
3) Developing mentorship programmes.
4) Developing a suitable internal promotion programme.
