A quasi-contract is not an actual contract but a legal obligation created by law to prevent unjust enrichment. Even if there is no offer, acceptance, or agreement, the law creates responsibility to ensure fairness. Under Sections 68 to 72 of the Indian Contract Act, different types of quasi-contractual obligations are explained.

Section 68 talks about necessaries supplied to a person who is incapable of contracting, such as minors or persons of unsound mind, and the supplier can claim reimbursement from their property. Section 69 says that when a person pays money which another person is legally bound to pay, the person who benefits must reimburse the one who paid. Section 70 explains that if someone lawfully does something for another person, without intending it to be free, and the other person enjoys the benefit, then the beneficiary must compensate. Section 71 defines the responsibilities of a finder of lost goods. The finder must take reasonable care of the goods, try to find the real owner, and may claim expenses. Section 72 covers the situation where money is paid or goods are delivered by mistake or under coercion.
The person who receives such benefit must return it. The entire concept of quasi-contract is based on preventing unjust enrichment, meaning no one should benefit unfairly at someone else's cost. Important case laws include Mohori Bibee v. Dharmodas Ghose, explaining necessaries for minors; State of West Bengal v. B.K. Mondal & Sons, explaining non-gratuitous acts; and Sales Tax Officer v.
