This page is to connect with people and let everyone know about the academic activities, talks, and seminars by eminent scholars organised by the Department of History, Presidency University (formerly Presidency College), Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The Department of History, one of the oldest academic departments of Presidency University, has carried forward its tradition of rich intellectual, s
ocial and cultural influence in Bengal and India since the time of the University’s origins as Hindoo College. Offering a globally renowned academic environment for South Asian
historical studies and research, the Department encourages students to build a spirit of enquiry as they research South Asian history and global history, from the early modern to the colonial and postcolonial periods and the interfaces between these histories. The Department is committed to equipping students for careers anywhere (in academia or outside), with a special focus on enabling them to target and achieve exceptional standards of research. The faculty is committed to intense, continual research which combines empirically-dense scholarship in a vast range of areas with suitable theoretical perspectives. The faculty’s multi-pronged teaching approach incorporates new pedagogic perspectives, encouraging critical thinking and original research. The Department also organises special seminars and lectures by renowned scholars and facilitates student presentations and workshops. All these aspects contribute to our students becoming globally competitive (many go on to pursue research at prestigious institutions in India and abroad) and socially aware citizens whose historical lenses enable their negotiation with the present world in thoughtful, responsible ways.
