'Know Your Cheenapara' - an awareness generating project at Tiretta Bazaar, India's oldest Chinese settlement or Cheenapara to start the discourse on shared heritage, shared cultures and shared responsibilities at a young age with students of Mahadevi Birla World Academy, Modern High School International, Indus Valley Word School and The Heritage School. Two Sundays ago, Sohini Pyne, Navpreet Arora , Vibha Mitra commenced the 3 month long research project, with the school kids joining us on site for:
1. An orientation presentation on the Calcutta Chinese community
2. A heritage walk led by Sohini Pyne and Navpreet Arora
3. A demonstration of Chinese calligraphy by two of the community elders - Mr. Chen Yh and Mr. Wu.
4. A lantern making workshop with 3 youngsters - Clayton, Gloria and Pauline.
This comes after the nomination of Tiretta Bazaar to the World Monuments Watch 2022 by the World Monuments Fund as one of the 25 sites globally in need of urgent protection.
Sharing some pictures from the hectic but absolutely fulfilling day!

Heritage Week. Invited by Sri Sri Academy to talk on Heritage Textiles and climate.
A lovely school. Well informed students.
The Principal was at the helm prodding the children to think and ask. Summing up points so beautifully
An engaging session. spoke of the importance of living heritage. Of neighbourhoods, unique to Calcutta. Not mere monuments like even the Victoria Memorial.

Calcutta, a Multicultural, Pluralistic Identity

Heritage Synergy
It is said that Calcutta is one of the few cities of the world which has a temple / Church for almost every religion in the world. Calcutta , the place which was the Paris of the East had people from all over the world coming here to trade, make money, prosper. They obviously set up their own places of worship. We walk down Bow Barracks to witness the Anglo Indian quarters, visit a Chinese Temple, a Jewish Synagogue, The Buddhist Dharmankur and the Parsi Agiaries.
Reuse Revive Reimagine
We end this walk at a heritage home which Own The Past is helping Reuse. We have to proactively come forward to collaborate with owners to fund the maintenance and repairs of these age old beautiful homes. 41 C R Avenue is the address which is available for meetings and programmes at a nominal cost. The beginning of a happy future for the “Past”. We will have a Brunch and have a Conversation
Calcutta absorbs and synergises
A conversation about the various religions and the message which is the same whichever way we perceive it. We will be joined by Prochy Mehta, Jael Silliman, Anthony Khatatchurian, Sabir Ahmed as representatives of different Faiths.
Let us chat and “adda” and make this memorable.
