The three pillars of democracy
- Legislation
- Executive
- Judiciary
constitute the framework for governing a state, ensuring a separation of powers and a system of checks and balances. Here's an overview of each pillar:
Legislation (Law-Making Body):
The legislature is responsible for making laws and setting the framework for governance.
In India, it consists of the Parliament at the national level (Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha) and State Legislatures at the state level.
The legislative process involves drafting bills, debating them, and passing them into law. The legislature also monitors the executive’s actions through parliamentary questions and discussions.
Executive (Law-Enforcing Body):
The executive implements and enforces the laws created by the legislature.
At the national level in India, the executive comprises the President, the Prime Minister, and the Council of Ministers. In states, it includes the Governor, the Chief Minister, and the State Ministers.
The executive's functions include policy-making, governance, and administration. It ensures that laws are executed, national security is maintained, and public services are delivered.
Judiciary (Law-Adjudicating Body):
The judiciary interprets and applies the laws to ensure justice and resolve disputes.
It includes courts, with the Supreme Court at the top, followed by High Courts at the state level and lower courts.
The judiciary safeguards the Constitution, protects fundamental rights, and acts as a check on the powers of the legislature and executive through judicial review.
