The modern concept of Mother's Day, as we know it today, is largely credited to Anna Jarvis, an American activist who campaigned for a dedicated day to honor mothers. After her mother's passing in 1905, Jarvis advocated for a national holiday to recognize mothers and their contributions to society.
In 1908, Jarvis organized the first official Mother's Day celebration at a church in West Virginia. She distributed white carnations, her mother's favorite flowers, as a tribute to all mothers. The idea gained popularity, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially designated the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day, a national holiday in the United States.

On 28 February 1928, a distinguished physicist, Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, discovered the phenomena of scattering of photons, now known as the Raman Effect. This extraordinary discovery led him to earn the Nobel prize in 1930, which was also Indiaâs first Nobel prize in science.
Later, in 1986, the Indian government approved the request from the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) and declared February 28 as National Science Day.
As a result, India celebrated its first National Science Day on 28 February 1987. This day celebrates and appreciates the contributions of scientists and technologists to the growth of this country.
