Dr. Debasmita Mukherjee, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Dr. J. Herbert Smith Centre for Technology Management and Entrepreneurship at the University of New Brunswick, Canada visited the Linguistic Research Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata on 14 May 2024 for possible collaboration and joint research with us in the area of humanization of ChatBots within the broad domain of Deep learning driven human-technology for system safety and natural language communication. We are happy to share some of the pictures of a very successful Linguistic Field Survey of LRU, ISI, Kolkata carried out in Kheria Sabar community in Purulia, West Bengal, India, 26-30 December 2023 for the purpose of documentation and digitization of Free Discourse Texts and Folk Texts of this endangered tribal community.
Location: Rajnoagarh, Kuda, Bengthupi, Mendli villages of Purulia, West Bengal.

The 'Sabar Shabdamala' (শবর শব্দমালা) is a collection of Sabar words which are supported with images, and Bengali and English conceptual equivalents. The lexical database is collected through several linguistic field surveys from the Kheria Sabar speech community living in Purulia district, West Bengal, India. It is designed and compiled by the LRU research team in the form of a wordbook for the first genetation of Kheria Sabar learners and general users. Special thanks to the entire team of the Paschimbanga Kheria Sabar Kalyan Samity, Purulia and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Govt. of India. The Linguistic Research Unit (LRU) of the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Kolkata in collaboration with the School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences (PCLS), University of Reading, UK organized a 2-day International Training Workshop on “Aphasia in South Asian Languages (ASAL-2023)” during 20-21 July 2023. The workshop was conducted by Dr. Arpita Bose of the University of Reading, UK as Principal Investigator and Prof. Niladri Sekhar Dash of LRU, ISI, Kolkata as Co-Principal Investigator. The workshop was a part of the Leverhulme Small Research Grants awarded to them by the British Academy, UK in 2022. Eminent scientists from India and abroad, selected students of Linguistics, research scholars and faculty members from different universities and clinical research laboratories from all over the country joined this workshop and collectively worked towards the development of a comprehensive assessment protocol for bilingual aphasic patients in South Asian languages. Special emphasis was given to testing protocol, text battery development, data from normal control, basic cognitive screening, data collection patients, data management, archiving, annotation, processing and analysis, data sharing and communication platforms, implications for research, social outreach, and other relevant topics. This pioneering multi-centered, interdisciplinary and international project focused on five Indian languages, namely, Bengali, Hindi-Urdu, Kannada, Malayalam and Tamil. Researchers and clinical scientists from UK, USA, Kolkata, Manipal, Chennai, Bangaluru, Indore, Delhi, and Trivandrum have taken part to make this workshop a grand success, which desires to play a crucial role in developing better assessment and rehabilitation mechanisms appropriate for bilingual aphasic people of South Asian countries.

The Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT), Ministry of Education, Govt of India has organized a 5-Day meeting for the preparation of “Fundamental Glossary of Mathematics (English-Hindi-Bengali)” at Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata during 8-12 May 2023. The meeting was held under the guidance of Officer-in-Charge Mr. Vijay Raj Singh Shekhawat, Assistant Director, CSTT, New Delhi. The local Cordinaror of the meeting was Prof. Niladri Sekhar Dash, Professor-in-Charge of the Social Sciences Division and Head of Linguistic Research Unit, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. Prof. Girish Nath Jha, Chairman of the CSTT virtually addressed the members of the meeting on the first day.
