The Linguistic Research Unit (LRU) was established by Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanabis, the Founder-Director of Indian Statistical Institute, in 1940’s or even earlier. Currently, the LRU focuses on several key research areas, including corpus linguistics, language technology, language documentation, digital lexicography, bi-directional translation and digitization of folk texts. The unit co
nducts analyses of large textual datasets in corpus linguistics to identify trends and patterns in language use. In the realm of language technology, the team develops innovative tools and applications designed to improve communication and understanding. They are also dedicated to language documentation, which involves meticulously recording and preserving languages to ensure their survival for future generations. Additionally, the LRU engages in digital lexicography, creating comprehensive and accessible online dictionaries that showcase the richness and diversity of languages.
