Indian Girl of 16 years with Autism Spectrum Disorder Creates History by Swimming the Famed English Channel.

Ms Jiya Rai a 16-year-old Autism Spectrum Disorder girl daughter of Madan Rai, MC-AT-ARMS II of INS Kunjali has successfully swum across the famous English Channel, a distance of 34 kms., in 17 hrs 25 min and became the youngest and the fastest para swimmer in the world to cross English Channel in Solo Swimming. In 150 years of Channel swimming history, Jiya is also the first Autism spectrum disorder Girl in the world to cross English Channel in solo swimming. Jiya dedicated this swim for Autism Awareness.

Ms Jiya started her heroic effort in early morning on 28 Jul 24 from Abbotts Cliff, England and finished at Pte De LA Courte- Dune. France. This heroic event would not have been possible without the financial support from Indian Navy(Western Naval Command), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, State Bank of India, Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Bagaria Foundation, Goa Shipyard Limited, Cochin shipyard limited and Book my Mortage(UK) which provided the financial support to fund this adventure event.

In the past the indomitable Jiya has won wide acclaim for her swimming prowess including world record for her swim across Palk Strait, a distance of 29kms in 13 hours.

More persons have climbed the Mount Everest than swam across the English Channel and in last 100 years only about 1700 persons have swum the English Channel. Why is it so difficult to swim across the English Channel?

The Channel water is known for its treacherous currents and the water temperature in July is around 18⁰ C or so and can cause hypothermia. There is a good chance of meeting jelly fish, seaweed and floating planks of wood. It is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world with over 600 tankers, ferries and other vessels which ply daily. Weather conditions do change abruptly making it almost impossible to plan the swim in advance.

As per the Channel Swimming Association rules, the swimmer cannot leave the water or touch the pilot boat or anyone who accompanies the swimmer. Food and liquids are handed over by boat crew using a long stick.

Despite being differently abled person and being non-verbal, her parent transformed her into a Global Open Swimming Champion. She has been awarded the highest National Award in para category by President of India. In 2022, she received Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, the highest award for citizen of India below 18 years of age.

Jiya’s trainer and coach is her father Madan Rai. Despite being differently abled person and also nonverbal, her father transformed her into a Global Open Swimming Champion. Madan and wife Rachana have been Jiya’s source of inspiration and motivation and have been her role model in overcoming so many challenges.
