IELTS Academic Essay 2023 July
Some believe the best way to improve road safety is to increase the minimum legal age for driving cars and motorbikes. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
The issue of road safety continues to be a significant concern globally and there are various suggestions on its improvement . The proposal to elevate the minimum legal age for driving cars and motorbikes, has attracted considerable debate. While the idea might appear sensible, it is not a solution to the multifaceted problem of road safety. We need a comprehensive approach to tackle this issue.
Admittedly, statistical data often indicate a higher rate of road accidents among younger drivers. This trend could be due to myriad factors such as insufficient driving experience, poor decision-making skills, or a risk-taking behaviour. Thus, raising the legal driving age may initially lead to a decrease in accident rates, making this a seemingly advantageous move.
However, focusing solely on age as a determinant of driving ability neglects other crucial elements. For instance, driver education, cognitive and psychomotor skills, and adherence to road safety norms play significant roles in ensuring safe driving practices. Moreover, older drivers also cause accidents due to slowed reflexes, deteriorating eyesight, and medical conditions.
A more holistic approach to enhancing road safety includes a comprehensive driver's education program, stringent licensing tests, and continuous assessment of driver fitness, irrespective of age. Such measures would not only equip drivers with the necessary knowledge and skills but also instill a culture of safety and responsibility.
In conclusion, while raising the minimum legal age for driving might marginally improve road safety, it is an oversimplified solution to a complex issue. A multi-pronged strategy would be more beneficial.
